Hello to all 213 members on our mailing list and welcome to Spring.

When I first joined the Association in 1993 or thereabouts there were 45 sculptors on the mailing list. Someone created, printed, folded and posted the newsletter to members - printed matter only rates…. Such a long time ago. And in those days meetings might be attended by 15 members - not every time, but for a particular speaker or issue. That’s a third of the members. These days there are greater calls on our time and attention. We now manage an advanced website - first dreamt in 1998, we have “cloud” computing for our exhibition entry forms - thank you Google. And we manage two, three or four exhibitions every year instead of just the faithful Annual & Awards.

From time to time sculptors receive emails through our website from site visitors. As it happens, as website administrator, I receive copies of those emails. Mostly I am happy to see that a sculptor’s work is attracting attention. Recently however a dozen emails came through - some emails for sculptors who are currently working, others for retired sculptors. The phone number looked weird - a red flag.

So if you receive an email - check it carefully - your contact details are not exposed if you do not respond. You may have a contact for a good commission or you may not. Use your judgement. You may wish to contact me to discuss. 0418 971 897.

Mould Making Workshop

The ASV held another successful workshop demonstrating mould making. It was run by Ryan Cambell from Rowe Advanced Materials/ Dalchem.

12 people attended and enjoyed the experience.

Not only did Ryan demonstrate numerous materials but also various ways of making moulds for more complex figures. He was very easy to talk to and willingly answered all our questions. Everything was set up and organised when we arrived and we came home with a finished mould.

Editor's Quote and President's Letter

Hello sculptors - the end of another month is rolling around. Some of us have exhibitions throughout the second half of the year. I see them coming up on the social media feeds - we really should put together a diary list so that groups of us can plan to see and discuss those shows.

Some of the exhibitions run outside the ASV have long lead times between close of entries and the start of the exhibition. This can make it hard to commit to showing your most recent work… will it sell in an exhibition prior to the one entered? Each exhibition has its own idiosyncrasies… we need to be aware of them and to work with them.

Patrick Duffey "Equus Machina"

Congratulations to everyone for an excellent exhibition displaying works of such a wide variety of themes, materials and techniques.

There was something for everyone as shown in the wide variety of pieces that received votes in the people’s choice award. This was won by Gillian Govan for her piece Sea Breeze closely followed by Patrick Duffy’s Broken Relics and Equus Machina.

Lots of votes also went to Sue Smales’ Planet Platypus and Julian Guy’s Lyrebird. Our exhibition was much admired, and we sold 11 pieces two via the online exhibition that continued for another week. Rob Anderson as always did a fantastic job of the photography of our pieces.

Following on from my 2023 exhibition, a chaotic dive into a scattered mind excitingly exploring the medium of recycled cardboard. This show sees a more in-depth approach to my work.

LIFE BEYOND THE BOX is an exploration of aspects of my life, sculptured cardboard busts speak to the celebrations, connections, struggles, and growth of my world over the last 3 years.

Each bust exists on the foundation of a sculptured cardboard skull and part skeleton to add a hidden layer to the sculpture, though not seen it exists to support and offer a sense of life beyond the material.

Cardboard connected me to my childhood, the ultimate raw material of my play. Cartons became castles, race cars, spaceships, and secret hideouts. My imagination didn’t just see boxes; it saw possibility.

Cardboard, humble as it is, now, as an artist, offers endless surprises in texture, form, colour, and strength and I invite the viewer to reconnect with their own sense of play.

We set up, recorded and then celebrated in fine style… there was a glitch when our judge, Suzette Wearne from McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery was unable to judge the show - emergencies happen - oh dear! And then Daniel Agdag was contacted, stepped in and did a remarkable job of judging and commenting.

The 2026 ski season opening at Falls Creek earlier this month saw the unveiling of Giovanni Veronesi’s Flower of the Alpine Sun, 2026 – the highest altitude public artwork in Australia.

Visitors to the work are immersed in the alpine environment to share in a unique experience of this place, fostering an appreciation of the ecosystem to encourage awareness for its preservation for generations to come.

Convened in conjunction with the Melbourne Prize Trust, Giovanni Veronesi won the Falls Creek Gateway Public Art Commission.

Hello Sculptors!

I joined the ASV in the 1990’s. Back then we held the Annual & Awards Exhibition in city foyers and monthly meetings in the Ola Cohn Centre in East Melbourne.

With only one exhibition each year sculptors pursued their various other lives - commission work, solo sculpture careers, small group exhibitions and other careers.

The meetings, held nearly every month, were full of valuable information, contacts, inspiration and kept us in touch with the mechanics of running an association. Just as important were the casual, face to face encounters over coffee or in the courtyard as we left the meeting - more information exchange, technical advice, tips on suppliers and everything that friendship and common purpose can enable.

With our Annual & Awards Exhibition we are not only face to face with each other but also with our visitors. Not all of us are extroverts who seek to engage with all and sundry in presenting our work - it is indeed a vulnerable position to put heart and soul into a sculpture and stand it up in public. Take courage!

Tim Read Visit

On Saturday with the help of Google we wound our way along a dirt road out the back of Warrandyte till we found the entry to Tread Sculptures, Tim Reads property. As we drove in we passed sculptures either side of the driveway and then came to the piles of fascinating metal. Tim was very welcoming and my partner who is an ex-chippie and part time mechanic really enjoyed the tour and asked more technical questions than I did. Tim and his partner who does the leadlight and glass slumping have a small inside gallery as well as the pieces in the grounds and around the house. After seeing the workshop and slumping kiln we did the sculpture trail that winds up and down the hill finishing below the house near the river. If you missed the visit I would highly recommend ringing 0405101001 and going out for a tour, I will take my brother when he is next down from Queensland.

Hi everyone,

our Annual Awards exhibition is rapidly approaching and I hope by the time the newsletter is out that acceptances will have been sent. Please check your junk mail to make sure you receive it . It is very important that you check the catalogue information and roster carefully. I would also encourage everyone to check if their plinths need repainting. We will have a delivery schedule as there is restricted parking out the front for 15 minutes so we need to move works in quickly and we will have people there to help with this.

There is a side entrance for disabled access that we are able to use to the left of the main entrance to avoid stairs and Jude will be waiting to open the door when the buzzer is pressed. All hanging works will need to be delivered first and those concerned will get special delivery time emailed to them. For those new to exhibiting with us there will be a desk inside the front door with the sign in register and a map of the layout so you know where to put your pieces. In the galleries themselves there will be a photo of your work roughly in the position it needs to be although we will rearrange some works when everything has arrived. You will be given a large number for your work and hopefully we will have a photobooth set up so works can be photographed on arrival.

Hello Sculptors!

This month you have two tasks:

Get your entry in to the Annual & Awards Exhibition and
Activate and update your presence on the ASV website

The entry forms for the Annual & Awards Exhibition hit the website as soon as MIFGS finished - they were ready even earlier. It is not ideal rolling from one exhibition to the next with little time to think about lessons learned and impressions created. At the moment we don’t have much choice - MIFGS is when it is and the Annual & Awards Exhibition currently has to fit into the Victorian Artists Society gallery availability. The ASV committee is looking at options - and if you have ideas that could help please let us know.

Hi everyone, our Annual and Awards exhibition is once again at the Victorian Artists Society at the end of June and entry forms are online now.

A few changes for this year as we are not sharing with painters and the exhibition will run for two weeks rather than three. This means we will have unlimited wall space for those of you who like to make pieces that can be hung but please think about how much pieces weigh and have more than one hanging line if necessary.

Hello Sculptors Victoria - and Hello Sculptors Victorious!

Sculpture in the Carlton Gardens launched with sales starting before the opening - patience my children there are 155 sculptures - there's plenty to go around. And we launched the new website in time for MIFGS! A few glitches have been ironed out over the days that we have been active and the congratulations have been rolling in - your work is looking great online. Recently we sent out an activation email to members - believe it or not your old password did not translate to the new site so we are asking you to use the accreditation link to set up a password all over again. If you’ve lost that email your option is to use the lost password system. But you’ll need to use whatever email address we have on record… otherwise things get messy and the site can’t recognise you.

Once into the site you will find it easy to see whether your membership is up to date… which means we will be a bit stricter about making you an ex-member if you don’t maintain financial status… obviously let us know if you are having difficulties so we can work something out and remember if you turn 80 you can apply for life membership for the price of one year’s membership… we want you to keep sculpting 🙂

There are other details of your profile page you can attend to - linking a website and social media, whether you work to commission and so on - it is intended as a portal to your information in the rest of the world as well as a record of your activities with the ASV.

I would also like to ask people to please give the person doing the roster for minding the exhibition more than one option as it makes their job much easier. For MIFGS we had 80 sculptors but 19 of them wanted the same time slot and only gave one option which was just not workable.

Are you ready for MIFGS 2026? Is your entry in and your plinth weather proof?

Wrapping up Herring Island had its complications… we have yet to assign the voter’s prize because the first email drew a blank… back to random numbers and the big box of votes…. And a sculpture broke in transit to its new home so we had the soul searching of who owed what to whom…. In the end the broken sculpture remains the property of the artist - but it is all very sad. Packing and posting sculpture is a dangerous undertaking - could your item survive being dropped a metre? I’ve used Pack and Send in the past but for commission work where the customer paid - it works out to a considerable sum - but perhaps we need to value our own work more?

As we speak the new website draws ever closer. The committee has been testing - making fake purchases, sending emails through the system, making pretend donations and checking through our sculptor’s profiles - it is looking amazing - but you are fed up with being told how good it is going to be, right? Just do it, they cry!*

Welcome to 2026 fellow sculptors!

Already we are half way through the exhibition in the Herring Island Gallery. The work has been admired by hundreds of lovely visitors, Jude Bridges-Tull has inspired creativity with environmental clay in the courtyard, and a few brave souls have signed up as new members. It makes me proud of the ASV that we continue to offer inspiring exhibitions in a diversity of venues. The work is amazing!

This morning I posted the heat plan for Herring Island on the Festival website and had an online meeting with Alberto about the new website - it certainly keeps us living in the moment! The website is happening - brighter, faster and more under our control… but there are so many little details to keep track of at this stage…. so watch this space!

Where is our next treasurer coming from?

Our current treasurer, John Ride, joined us after retiring from a different job more than ten years ago.

He has developed all the skills we need using MYOB and so we know where we stand financially.

Most of us operate on the comfortable assumption that today is a continuation of yesterday and tomorrow will continue from today - this is horribly untrue for us in December 2025 - tragedy close to home overwhelms tragedy in far off places even for the most humane of us.

The first blow to normalcy came with the unexpected death of Maudie Palmer AO. Maudie was instrumental in the creation of Heide Museum of Modern Art, Tarra Warra Museum of Art, and she helped McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery - all as well as being the driving force in the creation of Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park. At the time of her death Maudie was engaged in work and film making with Friends of the Yarra Birrarung. We can miss Maudie for her dynamic leadership in the arts - and we can mourn her mentorship and friendship to many artists and friends of the arts.

Patrick Duffy's sculpture ‘EQUUA MACHINA’ has won the Castlemaine Exhibition People's Choice Award and will receive the $250 prize.🙂
