A Letter for July

Photographer & assistants at work - AAE 2019
This year’s annual has met with some challenges. The first being finding a new venue which was suitably located within the city. Yvonne spent many a day walking the streets ( in a good way) and speaking with various building managers to finally secure us a place for our Annual. Yvonne did an amazing job and was fully supported by Gillian and Jenny. However this was but the first of the challenges. After securing the premises there came the conditions placed upon us by the management.

Diary Dates

Currently at Collins Square we have the Annual & Awards Exhibition - invitations are available at the exhibition. We’ll see you on Wednesday 31st July at 6:30 for our special celebration of the exhibition and presentation of the prizes. See you there!

Also, subject to change, we may have a talk by Carl Lutz in September tapping into his extensive experience in the woodworking world. Plus we are considering artist floor talks at the Annual & Awards exhibition - our greatest resource is our membership!

Vale Sigmund Jõrgenson 29 April 1940 – 21 July 2019

We remember Sigmund Jörgensen OAM, son of Justus Jörgensen who was the founder of Montsalvat.

Sigmund led Montsalvat from 1975 – 2005, during which time he made Montsalvat a haven for local and international artists. His contributions to art and culture were many, including the Melbourne culinary scene, running the award winning restaurant Clichy, being a judge at the Melbourne Asian Food Festival, food critic for the Melbourne Times and forming and Co-Directing the Montsalvat Jazz Festival which has gone on to become one of the major Melbourne cultural events.

Sigmund was a supporter of the acclaimed student orchestra, the Geminiani Chamber Orchestra; this orchestra trained many of the brilliant young musicians who happen to be back in Melbourne for this week to perform with the Australian World Orchestra.

After his father’s death Sigmund was one of the Directors of the Montsalvat Trust, oversaw the completion of many of Montsalvat’s buildings and initiated others, including the restaurant.

As part of Sigmund’s community involvement he was for a time also the Mayor of the Nillumbik Shire.

A friend and supporter of the arts and artists all his life.

Rest in peace Sigmund.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Montsalvat 2pm Friday 9 August.
