Editor's Quote and President's Letter for January 2026

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” (Henry David Thoreau)
Welcome to 2026 fellow sculptors!

Already we are half way through the exhibition in the Herring Island Gallery. The work has been admired by hundreds of lovely visitors, Jude Bridges-Tull has inspired creativity with environmental clay in the courtyard, and a few brave souls have signed up as new members. It makes me proud of the ASV that we continue to offer inspiring exhibitions in a diversity of venues. The work is amazing!

This morning I posted the heat plan for Herring Island on the Festival website and had an online meeting with Alberto about the new website - it certainly keeps us living in the moment! The website is happening - brighter, faster and more under our control… but there are so many little details to keep track of at this stage…. so watch this space!

Have you got your sculpture on track for MIFGS? Entries close in 5 weeks… ours is an exhibition of works for outdoors - for Courtyard, Garden or Estate. Over the years we have displayed a huge range of work for outdoors - the work is necessarily more time-consuming and expensive than sculpture designed for indoors environments.

I have heard on the grapevine that there will be an opportunity to show work indoors - upstairs… I’ll be kept informed and will let you know. This part of MIFGS will not be under ASV control - but it does present an opportunity for more fragile works - albeit with subject restrictions/inspirations to suit the concept of bringing gardens indoors.

And we have a holiday on Monday - to commemorate the foundation of the penal colony of New South Wales? Who knows? Australians like public holidays and in particular one at the end of the summer school holidays - just remember that we did open the Herring Island exhibition with an Acknowledgement of Country and we are working towards respect and reconciliation.

Happy sculpting
Jenny Rickards
