Hi All,

Welcome to the November / December newsletter like all of us Jenny is busy so a combined newsletter is coming your way. Even so it contains all you need to know about coming exhibitions and events and so much more.

Letter from a Member

I joined ASV in January 2013 and have been mightily impressed by the collective talent amongst members coupled with the diverse range of styles and media in the exhibited works. My first ASV exhibition as a participant was at the Kinross Arts Centre and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience: no sales but heaps of positive feedback and I enjoyed spending time chatting with the exhibition curator, Monica Mauer Jan, and our hard-working President, Gillian Govan.

Serious

The ASV website lists about 190 people as ASV members. Of these about 80 have paid their membership subscription for this year. Another 40 paid for 2012-2013 but have not so far paid for 2013-2014.

President's Message for October

Hi All,

Wow! Another year almost gone. I hope it has been great for all our members. Have you won a prize? Have you sold a Sculpture? Have you entered exhibitions? Most importantly have you had a great year making sculpture and really enjoying the journey as well as the result? This year we are having an early Christmas party at the home of Carmel Ritchie in Eltham. I see some members at our monthly meetings and others at exhibitions and some even socially but I would really enjoy the opportunity to meet more members and hear about what the year has held for you. Please join us for a relaxing BBQ lunch and a jolly chat with other sculptors about sculpture (or anything else). I love a good chat. For those who can’t make it I wish you a happy Christmas and a productive creative New Year.

Gillian Govan President

Toorak Village Sculpture 2014

Hi everyone,
we are inviting you to send in an entry to the 2014 Toorak Village Sculpture Exhibition.

Also, because the Sculpture Exhibition has been so successful - with some sales happening after the show has finished - it is again extended to 6 and a bit weeks from 1st May to 15th June 2014.

After Black Saturday

We received an email from Matt Parsons whose home was destroyed in the Black Saturday Fires of 2009:

Dear ASV,

I have many items that I recovered from my house that burnt down on Black Saturday. These things are just sitting in my house and garage and now I feel that I would like to turn them into something new and interesting and meaningful. Would it be possible to commission someone at ASV to perhaps make something from the items recovered ?

I have what’s left of a piano; the wheels a string, the mechanism for the piano stool, some crockery, some fused marbles, some work tools, door knobs, burnt coins, the mirror from the telescope etc…

It would be great to turn these things into something that can be an object of interest instead of just sitting in the garage collecting more dust…

Sculptors interested in working with Matt can contact him on  mparsons@phosphagenics.com
I would suggest that you get in touch before 15th November - to give him a chance to make a selection.

Good luck

Jenny

The Landfillart Project

Ricardo Alves-Ferreira forwarded us this email:

In August of 2008 I started an artist based reclamation project. As a result of this initial effort we now have the largest artist initiative ever achieved. Over 1,000 artists, comprising all 50 states and 53 countries, are working on The Landfillart Project.

Bolin and the Yarra - Connecting with nature 11 October to 5 November

This exhibition of sculpture, ceramic and botanical art was inspired by Bulleen Art & Garden’s magic location right next to the Yarra River - an island of indigenous bushland in the middle of suburban Melbourne. This area also has a rich cultural heritage, particularly the importance of the Bolin Bolin Billabong and precinct as an important annual Wurrundjeri meeting place.

President's Letter for September

Gillian Govan

Hi All,

Another month and another month without producing any art work so this time a very brief message. Brief though it is written with sincerity. Sincere as I have some special thanks.

Dates for your Diary

ASV meetings are being held in the Ashburton Baptist Church Meeting Rooms, enter from the Marquis Street carpark Melway 60D9
  • Tesselaar Sculpture Prize - 13th September to 9th October
  • Monthly meeting 9th October in the Ashburton Meeting Rooms, Mary McMahon has suggested a video clip - see the article for more information
  • Monthly meeting in November - what will it be? perhaps the Xmas party?
  • 22 December "Santa" drop off at Herring Island
  • Herring Island Summer Arts Festival - our exhibition will be 11th January to 27th January - early I know so check the article for ways to exhibit without letting the side down or having family feuds.

The September Meeting

Jenny Whiteside demonstrating her tools
Jenny Whiteside commenced her talk with a bit of background about her first piece, carved from Australian Serpentine that she has retained as a yardstick of her achievements and for sentimental reasons. Having made this first work she had a complete change of direction and has never looked back and is very passionate about what she does.

The October meeting and onwards....

Mary McMahon has stepped up again for October offering to show a short video and briefly discuss the work of Nek Chand and his sculpture garden in India. Internet connections willing we will also check in on Bruno’s Garden in Marysville. Showing movie clips from the Internet is a good way to start discussion in a meeting - if anyone else has suggestions they can be added in. The idea of getting more information and possibly a visit from a 3D scanning, modelling and printing company excited a lot of interest when it was discussed in the September meeting - so we are pursuing the idea... keep in touch on that one. Our plans include a Christmas party.

Upcoming ASV Exhibitions

Here is where you find out your next exhibition opportunities - don't miss out!

News Outside the ASV

In this post you'll find news from Sculpture by the Sea, Lorne Sculpture Biennial, Melbourne Museum, Creative Partnerships Australia, Bolin Bolin Gallery, Southern Way and McClelland Commission and a rumour about an Inge King exhibition.

Michael Meszaros sculpture installed at Melbourne University plus an opportunity

Michael's work at the University of Melbourne
Michael Meszaros has sent us a photo of his University of Melbourne Medical School work.

It symbolises the developing knowledge of the human body and our ability to look into it. It is 2.3 metres high, bronze, unveiled 12th August.

The News from Ballarat

It is disappointing to note that the call for artists at Miners Rest involves the submission of designs prior to appointment or payment of artists. An odd omission from a sculptor.

President’s letter for August

Hi all fellow sculptors, members and friends..
I am back unopposed as president as are most of the previous committee members and while I am happy to work with this great group of people it was disappointing that there were no other nominations. So the same people are again doing the committee work.

I would like to thank retiring members Suzanne Kaldor and Monica Mauer for their help and support and Robert Kendi who has come on board as Membership secretary and Pat O’Connell who is helping with distribution of the newsletter.
The numbers of members at the Annual General meeting was also disappointing especially as we had such an interesting, inspiring speaker in Damien Vick.

August Meeting - talk and AGM

Prominent Melbourne sculptor Damien Vick was the featured guest at the August 14 meeting and AGM of the ASV.

September Meeting

Rosa Tato has through her community art project gained an understanding of the essence of human experience. Her "Embracing Distance " sculptured panels reflect the cultural diversity and personal mementos and histories of some of the residents in a public housing tower in North Melbourne who have resettled I Melbourne from 16 different countries including Somalia Egypt Sudan, China, Vietnam and Spain.
We are most fortunate that Rosa has agreed to talk to us about this project. Thanks to one of our members Mary McMahon for setting this up for us. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 11th September 7:30pm at Ashburton.

President's Letter for July

As we draw near to the end of another sculpture year and the Annual General Meeting approaches I ask all members to think about what you can do for the association. It doesn’t matter how small. I am delighted that Robert Kendi has come on board as membership secretary and that Pat O’Connor is helping Jenny with the news letter but it still seems to be left to the same few to manage the general running and administration of the association. Please put up your hands to help lighten the load of the committee and exhibition coordinators and share their workload. Most are trying to juggle family and full time jobs so could do with a hand. Do you know anything about publicity, advertising, computers websites or just putting letters in envelopes? Please contact me or any of the other committee. Please join us at the AGM to hear what our plans are for the future and to listen to what will be a most interesting talk by one of our members Damien Vick. See you there.

Letter from the Presidential Team

Gillian is away on a well earned break and taking some spiritual renewal from the Canadian Rockies. The report is that the awesome mountains are putting life into real perspective. So we can expect some fresh fire of creativity when our president returns.

In the mean time, back at the ranch as it were, our vice president Michael Meszaros has been holding the fort and here is the news from the organising end of the ASV:

Dates for Your Diary

ASV meetings are being held in the
Ashburton Baptist Church Meeting Rooms
enter from the Marquis Street carpark Melway 60D9
12th June Mary van den Broek will talk about the ISC Sculpture Symposium in Auckland

10th July "Show and Tell" sculptors are invited to bring images of work in progress, sketches, small works or anything else of interest.

The May Meeting

The May 8th Sculptors Association meeting had a special purpose to vote on the proposal by Jenny Rickards to recognize Valda Cuming as an Honorary Life Member of the ASV. President Gillian Govan spoke in favour of the proposal and said " Valda joined the ASV sometime in the latter 1980’s – it was after the 1985 retrospective – she didn’t exhibit there, but since joining she has exhibited at every Annual, MIFGS and Herring Island exhibition that was put on – a great contributor! Valda has won the Margaret Gunnersen William Hoggan Thomas Award – most recently in 2010. Apart from the ASV Valda has been a mainstay of the Beaumaris Art Group, the MSWPS and a member of the Eclectics exhibiting group. Valda served as President of the ASV in 1992-3 and was on the committee until 2002. Anyone who has sat an exhibition with Valda will know that she is unfailingly generous as well as charming, intelligent and talented. "

Members were invited to vote on the proposal which was then passed unanimously, and were then thanked for their recognition by Valda.

Contraction Cetta Pilati

The meeting then welcomed the presentation by Cetta Pilati, who has an established reputation as a marble mosaic artist. Cetta completed her B.A. in Fine Art at RMIT in 1992, creating sculptures from wood, glass and steel. She produced her first major work "Contraction" which was displayed long-term at RMIT and in turn satisfied her mother’s disapproval of commencing her art journey. Cetta lost her mother last August who was and still is a strong influence in her work.

ASV & Kinross Arts Centre – Special Exhibition

Entry forms and conditions of entry have been finally posted, so hopefully you should all be thinking hard about the pieces you would like to exhibit at Kinross. The Information and entry form is available on the ASV website at http://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/images/uploads/newsletters/Kinross_Arts_Centre_ASV_Exhibition_2013.pdf or you can enter online at http://sculperenewsletter.blogspot.com.au/p/loading.html

Kinross Arts Centre does not have any stands on site, so every accepted sculpture will have to be submitted with a clean, stable and freshly painted white stand.

Sitting hours will be from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, so make sure you indicate your availability as this is a condition to participate in this exhibition.
Don’t forget that applications close on Friday 5 July!!!

President's Letter for April 2013

Hi

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? It doesn’t matter really if you are an artist. I have had some very interesting experiences this month learning about communication through art. Art can be a communicator on two levels firstly through the art itself and secondly through the people we meet and converse with about our art or the art of others,

Another Copyright Issue

There’s an interesting article in the Art Newspaper concerning a copyright issue between an Italian sculptor and a Chinese sculpture construction company.

The article is worth the read - but it appears that the copy is a very good quality one - it’s just that the design would appear to have been stolen.

I hope you have all had an enjoyable Easter break. I felt very uplifted by the wonderful results of the International Flower and Garden Show. This was ably coordinated and run by Mark Cowie who we must all agree did wonderful job. The variety of work and the standard was outstanding which resulted in wonderful sales. ASV MIFGS Sculpture Exhibition 2013 (20-24 March)

First we have the judge's comments and images of the winning works and then a letter from Mark Cowie Curator - to the exhibitors.

The judge, John Wooller had a pretty tough job selecting prizes - and here are his comments:

I would like to congratulate The Association of Sculptors of Victoria for, once again, mounting an exhibition of sculpture of great variety of forms, materials, techniques and aesthetics. I think there are very few aspects of sculpture that are not exhibited here, which reflects not only the true nature of sculpture but the diversity of sculptors within the Association.

From the March Meeting

Dean Bowen with president Gillian Govan and secretary John Bishop

Another very successful monthly meeting was held on March 13th well attended by members who were greatly entertained and impressed with the presentation by accomplished Melbourne artist Dean Bowen.

Honorary Life Membership Proposal

The procedure for creating an honorary life membership in the ASV follows these phases:

• the proposal is put to the committee,
• once accepted it is put to the members who vote in a general meeting,
• the life membership is effective from the next membership cycle (generally the financial year) and the medallion is presented at the next annual exhibition.

I am honoured to propose Valda Cuming as an honorary life member of the Association of Sculptors of Victoria.

Hi All.

Oh dear! Another challenging month for the Association. Still no venue for our Annual Exhibition and a website that crashed on us. Despite this Mark Cowie is on track for another great exhibition at the International Flower and Garden Show. I would like to wish all the entrants success and enjoyment but please remember it doesn’t just happen. I am sure Mark would be happy for offers of help particularly in sitting the rosters. For those who did it last year I am sure you will agree it was a worthwhile experience and an opportunity to promote your work and meet fellow sculptors.

The February Meeting was held on Wednesday 13th at the Baptist Hall in Ashburton. It was well attended with one visitor Jennifer Jeffrey and a new member Glenys McKenna, a limestone sculptor student of Jenny Whiteside.

March Meeting - 13th March 2013

On 13th March at 7.30pm Dean Bowen will talk to us about this journey in painting ,printmaking and sculpture. His bronze sculptures are represented in many public and private collections.. His idiosyncratic sculptures combine humour and gentle irony but these proficiently cast works have helped him explore the world around him.

Report on Herring Island Summer Arts Festival Sculpture Exhibition 2013

The ASV had a smaller exhibition this year – 38 works from 23 sculptors made it to the island. This compares with 26 sculptors and 42 works in 2012. The quality of work was high as usual and the work was well received by our visitors. Demonstrations by Christopher Taylor, John Bishop, Gillian Govan and Jenny Rickards were also well received. There is a slide show of images on our news website sculperenewsletter.blogspot.com.au

I am a second generation artist, dad was a painter.

My focus on sculpture began in 1975 during my initial 5 years fine art training; when I majored in sculpture at RMIT. There have been a number of returns to further study punctuated by periods teaching art. From 1998 to 2002 I taught sculpture: bronze casting, mould making and life modeling at RMIT.

President's Letter January 2013

Gillian Govan

Hi All,
I hope you have all have had a wonderful festive season with friends and family and a bit of a rest after the mad build up to Christmas.  I have just returned from a couple of weeks in the country where I worked for short periods in my very, very hot shed. While there I was very aware of the fact that many of our members are country members and some have already been threatened by this bushfire season. I would like to let them know that their friends in the ASV are thinking of them and hoping they and their families will keep safe.
