Report on Herring Island Summer Arts Festival Sculpture Exhibition 2013

The ASV had a smaller exhibition this year – 38 works from 23 sculptors made it to the island. This compares with 26 sculptors and 42 works in 2012. The quality of work was high as usual and the work was well received by our visitors. Demonstrations by Christopher Taylor, John Bishop, Gillian Govan and Jenny Rickards were also well received. There is a slide show of images on our news website sculperenewsletter.blogspot.com.au

We had fine mild to warm weather pretty much throughout the show – very fortunate.

The Australian Open Tennis was on for the first two weekends – my feeling is that it took some of our patronage and a fair bit of attention.

Number counts can be a bit random – when we get busy it’s mainly guess work. The demonstration events seem to be big word of mouth draw cards.

Contents of the donations tin $147.70 – down on previous years reflecting lower numbers rather than lack of generosity. This money goes to the Festival – expenses this year include the acquisition of a Domain name, paint for the sculpture plinths (unfortunately applied after our exhibition) and some screens – room dividers.

The ASV contributes $450 participation fee - for this the Festival prints invitation flyers and places ads in Art Almanac, Gallery magazine when we can afford it and lots of free sites. Flyers are distributed to Federation Square information centre, the NGV and some libraries. The rest of the publicity and flyer distribution comes from the participants.

Working with the new website was quite difficult in the organising stages and pointed up a few problems that we may have fixed before MIFGS. Uploading images was easier than the old site but the resultant presentation was disappointing. This year there was no charge to the ASV for the photography and uploading of images.

QR codes were shown on the catalogue numbers on the works. A few people used them – they linked to the sculptor’s profile page.

The exhibition was well received and people are looking forward to the subsequent groups.

Congratulations to Monica Mauer Jan, Paul Cacioli, Andrew Bryant and Lise Toft on the sales of their work.

For next year we need to provide more incentives to both exhibitors and visitors – the market is becoming more competitive and we need to do more than to put on a good exhibition.
