President's Letter and Editor's Inspiration

“Sculpture is an art of the open air. Daylight, sunlight, is necessary to it, and for me, its best setting and complement is nature.”

Henry Moore

Hello to the last part of 2023! Many of you, like myself, are frantically finishing work for the McClelland Gallery Exhibition. The race is on with the deadline on 13th December. Unlike Douglas Adams we can’t appreciate the whooshing sound that deadlines make as they go by… to be late is to miss out in this case. And what an opportunity this coming exhibition will be! Here is the chance to strut our stuff on a prestigious stage and seek out new, appreciative audiences. The opening for our guest speaker’s exhibition at McClelland is coming up on 2nd December… check out the McClelland newsletter for details. John Meade’s exhibition will be a counterpoint to our “art of the object” approach to sculpture.

Feeling Sculpture

Helping others appreciate sculpture: A recent event from ART on the HILL

A recent event from ART on the HILL

I put a short post on Facebook and a lady contacted me almost immediately on Messenger. She has a client who is sight impaired.

He loves art, but galleries have refused to let him touch sculpture. This is his only way of seeing so has been very disappointed.

Social Media Update

The social Media team has been very busy with promoting ASV shows and calls for artists. But, did you know we are very happy to promote any information, and any image you provide, to promote you personally, or exhibitions/ open studios you are in??

Social Media is a way to get information out for free, to a wide public. The more interesting our page is, the more people will follow us- so it is good for the ASV to promote ALL our artists. And it’s good for you to promote yourself, your art, or your shows…

"Where did I learn to understand sculpture? In the woods by looking at the trees, along roads by observing the formation of clouds, in the studio by studying the model, everywhere except in the schools.”
 Auguste Rodin

The Wheels were spinning…

Life goes on and sometimes we throw up a bit of mud for no good outcome - and sometimes good fortune falls into our laps. So it is with our exhibition at McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery: just as Herring Island threatened to be just too hard we received an offer that is too good to refuse. So let us make the most of our exhibition in the Sarah and Baillieu Myer Pavilion and greet a new audience of people on the Mornington Peninsula in the Summer - a bush holiday near the sea - what’s not to like.

Notes from the ART on the HILL

We had a wonderful experience at the Art on the Hill Exhibition.

I put a short post on Facebook and a lady contacted me almost immediately on Messenger. She has a client who is sight impaired.

He loves art but galleries have refused to let him touch sculpture. This is his only way of seeing so has been very disappointed. His carer asked if we would allow him to touch our sculptures. I said I thought this was possible under supervision and contacted Paul. He was delighted to be able to share the work with him. He went around explaining which he could touch and those he could not touch, he described why, the colour, the texture and the materials. Those he touched he was able to make deep and meaningful comments about. Both Paul and I were emotionally affected by this experience.

Paul and Jude have had similar experiences at MIFGS and Herring Island and I hope in the future we will be able to show more sight impaired art lovers, our sculptures. Obviously, this would need supervision and organising but it is so worthwhile.

Opportunities and interesting art

Most of our active sculptor members exhibit in outside exhibitions. This expands both the number and range of exhibition experiences and enables you to learn from seeing a diversity of work and meeting the makers. We should get together and pool our calendars so that you can maximise your experience and minimise the stress of moving between shows. One way of course is the collaboration between members to help deliver work, setting up together and pooling resources... it all happens informally at the moment - we can do even better if we make sure we keep in touch. Perhaps the monthly meetings - even online - can help here - or the chats such as at Jude's place... think about it and let us know.

Letter from the President

Newsletter editor's quote for the month:
"To make sculpture can be as basic as this: you need a love of making things ... and when you have made work for a long time you can't just throw it together ... When you know how to do something properly, like playing a musical instrument - whatever it happens to be - you can't do it badly, you would be untrue to yourself ..." Geoffrey Bartlett

“ Hi Everyone,

Firstly, thank you for participating in the exhibition. The quality and standard of the art was amazing. I received many comments on what a wonderful exhibition it was and asking if this will be an annual event.

The inaugural Spring Festival at Mont Delancey was held on the 23rd and 24th in conjunction with the Art on the Hill. We had perfect weather for the event.

Jude Bridges and Heather Wilson helped by providing family friendly activities associated with sculpting. It was a great success.

On the surface the life of the ASV is pretty quiet at the moment. Beneath the smooth waters we are paddling furiously.

Each of you will be out in the studio developing your own stories for our times... I’m inspired by the work I catch up with on Instagram. Well done all of you for keeping the flame alight. There are quite a few outside exhibition opportunities available and some potential commissions have been offered through the newsletter - do let us know whether you have sold or been offered work out of any of these.

Here we remind you of our current program - stay in touch as opportunities may arise soon.

Art on the Hill

Paul Cacioli is getting Art on the Hill going again this year.
He has been working with Mont De Lancey to see how to attract more people to the exhibition as well as to Mont Delancey. They have come up with an idea to incorporate the exhibition with a Spring Festival. The title of the festival is Mont Delancey Spring Festival – Art and Artisans.
The Art on the Hill Exhibition will run from the 20th to the 24th of September and the Spring Festival will run on the 23rd and 24th of September. The Spring Festival will include artisans such as bakers, brewers, distillers, wood working, blacksmithing, leather makers, etc. It will also include some family friendly activities.

In many ways the Annual and Awards exhibition is the culmination of a year’s work.... and as with all culminations it is the start of more work... inspiration or just that itch to do things better, sharper and clearer - what is it that drives us?

URGENT ASV MEDIA REQUEST

Our ASV society runs on volunteers. Therefore, when the need arises an urgent request is put out to the wonderful, creative artists in this group. Please help with social media. It’s not as formidable a task that it sounds. As Gillian wrote: Art lovers won’t come to the exhibition if they don’t know it is on. “ Social media support request…We are all excited for our annual and awards exhibition in the Victorian artists society this year- I am sure. To get as many visitors as we can- we need publicity. Social media is a fantastic way to promote our work, our exhibitions and get the news out to Art lovers out there. This year we are running into a small problem; I am away during the annual.
