President's Letter (and inspiration from Auguste Rodin via our editor)

Where did I learn to understand sculpture? In the woods by looking at the trees, along roads by observing the formation of clouds, in the studio by studying the model, everywhere except in the schools.”

— Auguste Rodin

Happy New Financial Year everyone,

Van Phu Le "Who am 1? Who are They?"
We put on a great performance at the Annual and Awards Exhibition - a glittering show of art and artistry. We celebrated our winners and acknowledged that every work had serious merit - except for Aukje van Vark’s Happy Dance which was seriously happy. And congratulations to the winner of the People’s Choice Award - Van Phu Le for “Who am I? Who are they?” and runner up Sue Smales for “BooBook”

For this next half of the year we will be making our own fun. Starting on Wednesday 9th August the evening sees us meeting in real life with a "Show and Tell" at Gillian Govan's home - always hospitable and a great time can be expected. Please bring ideas, problems, new tools to show us... and be prepared for a friendly evening.

Domenica Wallace "Sailing to Infinity"

We had a good chat with Domenica Wallace at the May online meeting. Domenica has her studio and gallery in Fish Creek (on the way to Wilsons Promontory for us Melbourne people) There is the chance of a sculpture workshop and pop up exhibition weekend in November - something to stop us pining for the Victoria Sculpture Prize in Sale - so watch the newsletter for further information.

Whilst we don’t have scheduled ASV exhibitions in the near future we will be planning for those that will be run next year. Anyone who wants to learn more about the Tesselaar Sculpture Prize should contact John Bishop. We’ll attempt to visit this year’s Tulip Festival and chat with the Tesselaar people regarding the plans for 2024. Also the Victoria Sculpture Prize will be back in ‘24 - so be ready and use your time wwisely

And of course Paul Cacioli will be offering you participation in “Art on the Hill” in September.

Speaking of which... Talking with committee people isn’t all hard work. Some of us meet at my place for the online meetings and share the screen and a quiet glass - not to mention the lovely fire. Make some time to get to know each other - online and in real life. Friends make sculpture even better.

Talk soon

Jenny Rickards

President
