Hi all,

 Well I am back in the chair again. I didn’t have to campaign like Donald Trump…. There was no competition! However this is my last year so I would like someone to help out and take over next year please.

This year started very well with a very inspiring talk by Sonia Payse and then a visit to the National Gallery to hear from Bruce Armstrong about his amazing sculptures.

It was interesting that the key message of both sculptors was… make art. Make as much as you can. Enjoy making it for the sake of making it. Nobody sees your ideas while they are in your head.

After a distinguished career in architecture, Graeme took up sculpting as an expression of his creativity in retirement, perfectly in tune with the rich and diverse cultural life he and Carol had led over the years. 

By happy coincidence I was running limestone sculpture workshops at Bulleen Art & Garden in the early 2000s, and Graeme turned up for a session. After that we had many sculpting adventures together in his garden studio. It turned out that Graeme had already acquired a couple of my pieces for his garden, having sold some of his renowned art collection in order to "re-invest".

Before the start of the AGM on Nov 9th, Members were treated to a vibrant enthusiastic presentation by the multi talented Sonia Payes. From a background on photography Sonia has developed her art from new – media , and from 2D through to 3D into sculpture.


Sonia Payes is a photographer and new media artist based in Melbourne, Australia. A Master Photographer with the Australian Institute of Photography, Payes studied at the Australian College of Photography, Arts and Communication and at The Melbourne School of Art and Photography.

Work by Sonia Payes in the McClelland Gallery Survey Exhibition

9 November The ASV is privileged to have Sonia Payes as guest speaker for the AGM on November 9. Sonia Payes is a photographer, new media artist and sculptor. She has had 14 solo exhibitions and been included in over 50 group shows both in Australia and overseas including Auckland, Shanghai, London and Los Angeles. Her works are held in numerous public, corporate and private collections including the NGV. Most recently her (MAP) sculpture, ReGeneration was acquired as permanent public art by the City of Melville in Perth. In 2014 Payes was the recipient of the McClelland Achievement Prize (MAP).

Exhibition Entries

Entry forms for Herring Island and MIFGS 2017 are available on the website. All entries will be made online - with arrangements made for those very few members without Internet access. The procedure is to download the entry instructions and conditions of entry from http://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/exhibitions/application_form and then proceed to the newsletter website to find the actual entry forms.

Once you click on submit you will receive a record of your entry - this isn’t automatic acceptance just a record. Acceptance notification will occur after the closing date for the particular exhibition.

Mark Cowie

Mark Cowie was the featured speaker at the October meeting that was well hosted by Marija Patterson, in the absence overseas of ASV President, Gillian Govan.

Mark took us through the way his life has unfolded, from his 20 years as a criminologist working in the prison system and with Victoria Police, to his lifetime change to being a semi-professional sculptor, but who is required to paint houses for an income, because the latter, like for most artists, does not pay the bills. He has been a member of the ASV for 13 years, and has been an absolute tower of strength in organising the sculpture exhibitions at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden show and the Tesselaar Sculpture Prize over the last nine years.

Tesselaar Sculpture Prize

The ninth annual Tesselaar Sculpture Prize has been unveiled at the Tesselaar Tulip Festival.


As was to be expected, the judges had a very stimulating yet difficult exercise to undertake given the broad-ranging nature of the sculptures exhibited in the competition. The judges were very impressed by the quality, standard and styles of work presented for their assessment and commented on the innovative and stimulating utilisation of media and presentation.

I have always been exploring my creative mind through a variety of techniques like oil painting, water colouring, drawing and photography, craft, sawing, modelling, ceramics, pottery and many more.

How to survive the transition to online entry forms.... and still be a sculptor

Every exhibition that the ASV runs is managed by volunteers - and they do an amazing job. We handle invitations, prizes, catalogues, catering, parking permits, coordinate a sitting roster, set up and dismantle and still produce some sculpture ourselves.

In order to continue doing this and stay sane(?) we are looking at online entry forms being the default method of entry for exhibitions. We have been using the forms for data entry for some time now and some of you have already entered online. With the help of Google we now have forms that will send you a record of your submission - and even refuse to take your entry unless you confirm that the work is your original work and you’ve read the conditions. Pretty awesome really.

Google puts the data into a lovely spread sheet for us and that enables us to manage the exhibition - well the paperwork side of it.... and our amazing website designer has produced a system whereby we can upload the new entries to our website with .. well ... a few clicks and not too much swearing ;-)

So for our next exhibitions we’ll post you the Conditions of Entry and a check list of what to do to enter online. And what to do if you have no way of entering online.

The aim is to streamline the administration so that we can all concentrate on our real work - so yes do give us feedback after you have faced the computer and entered your work. The forms will appear on the newsletter website http://sculperenewsletter.blogspot.com.au - and will vanish soon after the close of entries.

Hi everyone,

Congratulations on a great exhibition…. What is a great exhibition? Does it depend on sales? I have been involved in quite a few of our exhibitions over the years. Three years ago we sold 19 works. Last year only 4 this year 8. But is that the bench mark for a good exhibition? I was at the exhibition quite a lot and listened to the comments from both exhibitors and visitors. The main negative comment was that people were there on business and too busy to look at art. Most looking at their phones instead!

Sculptor Profile: MARTIN GOLDIN

I migrated to Australia from South Africa at the end of 2012, to follow my children, having retired from Ear, Nose and Throat surgery.

"The Eagle has Landed" from the 2016 Annual

I first started sculpting in SA whilst doing my National Service in the army (1969-1970) on South Africa’s northern border along the Limpopo River. My camp was a tented camp out in the bush where I manned a clinic attending to soldiers and the indigenous population. Some of the locals walked up to 50kms to see me and they often brought wooden carvings to try and sell. I realised how beautiful some of the local timber was, together with having a lot of spare time at my disposal, and so I began carving with some very basic tools.

"A great exhibition, the best yet! For the first time ever in any art show I totally agree with the judges. Curators need a pat on the back, work was well placed and easily viewed. Standards are getting better and better. Sculptors are moving into new areas with different materials and techniques well handled. I feel that the Association is steadily fulfilling its charter and growing to more maturity with each exhibition.

For myself I am not producing much work these days and will be having an open weekend 19th -20th of November to sell off materials, mainly wood and stone, some tools and of course finished work, all welcome.

This November the beautiful Mountain Ash forests of Toolangi will provide the backdrop and inspiration for Toolangi Sculpture Trail 2016, an event conceived to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the International Sculpture Event UNESCO, 1996. 20 years on the trail still endures and from 6-20 November it will become a hub of artistic and environmental activity.

A major part of organising an exhibition is the publicity. In thinking about this we decided to send out a press release and to do this we started looking at us and what and who we are.

We are an Association. A group of people who have come together with a common interest and in looking further I realised from about 130 members we have at least 14 different nationalities. How interesting is that.

A Stone Sculpting Workshop Adventure

From the outset, the possibility of travelling to the mountains of Aragon in Spain to learn stone sculpting seemed as remote an idea as the place itself, but as all the variables deciding whether we four Melbourne sculptors could go fell into place, so did our determination. We must have instinctively known that connecting with Jon Sait who runs Studio Golondrina in the mountainous north east of Spain, was a lucky find, and so Tania Stavovy, Clare Collins, Anna Auditore and myself made the trip.

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in art and attended painting lessons as a young boy in Poland. However, life in Poland just after the war was quite difficult. During the war my father’s family was killed leaving him as the only surviving Wajchman. The tragedies experienced by so many during the war are a key theme in many of my pieces.

This is the latest in the series of surveys of artists that Professor Throsby has been undertaking since 1983. The results of the previous surveys were published in reports that have been widely utilised in the arts and cultural sector as comprehensive and reliable sources of information about the circumstances of professional arts practice in Australia. Hi All,

What exciting times. Last week we held a meeting to discuss the possibility of developing a future connection with McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. A few members gathered to hear a proposal by the Director John Cunningham who spoke with great enthusiasm about our involvement in their plans to expand and their vision as they move towards 2021. Most of you will know McClelland Gallery at Langwarrin set in 16 hectares of natural bushland attended by 230,000 visitors annually.

If you do not receive an acknowledgement of your entry by the 8th July - particularly if you entered via email - please contact Yvonne. The June Meeting

In spite of a cold and wet winter’s evening, a good number of members, including two new members, (Christen-Jo and Julie) enjoyed the June "Show and Tell" meeting which was kindly hosted and held at the home of our President Gillian Govan.

Several members brought work or shared their processes. The presentations were met with enthusiastic, informative discussions and feedback. First time visitor and new member Christen-Jo – Stone was warmly welcomed by the group and outlined her history in creating and teaching creative art, her extensive travels, and more recently her using basket weaving in a sculptural form.

We all agreed, whilst enjoying supper provided by members, that the "show and tell" get-togethers are engaging and an excellent opportunity for us to get to know each other and our practice.

Hi All,

I have tried in my recent letters to be positive about the enthusiasm and input from members who have volunteered to help with the running of the Association.

There are many reasons for becoming members of this great Association. We meet other sculptors, network, learn new skills through workshops and studio visits. We receive a newsletter that keeps us up to date and we have a great website. But I think what really draws people in are the fabulous exhibitions that we hold each year. What would we be without these exhibitions?

• 8 June “Show and Tell” at Gillian Govan’s home at 7.30pm. The idea is for us to meet in a relaxed atmosphere to talk about our work in terms of inspiration, process and perhaps marketing. It’s an opportunity for new members to engage with older members and share their ideas etc.
• 13 July - at Ashburton speaker to be announced
• 10 August at Ashburton. Mark Cowie will talk about his work
• 14 September Life Drawing Roar Studios - Port Melbourne 2 hour tutored class - model, tables/easels provided. Cost between $21- $30 per person depending on numbers. (maximum number 20) This would be a great opportunity to brush up on skills or explore a new direction.

Inge King 1915 - 2016

Jenny Rickards and I attended the memorial service for the sculptor Inge King who died on 23rd April age 100years. It was an incredible experience hearing about the life of such a talented, committed sculptor.

The service was held in the Great Hall of the National Gallery. Tony Elwood Director of the Gallery welcomed us and spoke briefly about the gallery association with Inge and her exhibitions held there.

Dear members, 

We cooperate as an association to advance the practice of sculpture and the reputation and appreciation of sculpture and sculptors in the community.

This is regardless of whether or not we make a living from sculpture and regardless of our preferred style or medium.

To this end we support artists’ moral rights; we advocate a professional attitude to the production and presentation of work and encourage the artistic and intellectual stimulation of interaction amongst artists of all persuasions.

 

The above is our philosophy. Most of our members would agree that with the informative newsletters about opportunities around Australia and within the association, a regularly updated website, meetings and visits to sculptor’s studios and a professionally run Exhibitions programme with prizes, not to mention the friendships formed we certainly fulfil this philosophy.

This is a year when obituary writers are crowding each other out of the papers: a couple of days ago we lost Inge King and during last week I was notified that former member Alwyn Harbott had passed away in March - we’ll publish obituaries when we can.

Calling it Time

Back in 2004 when members of the ASV discovered that Maudie Palmer was no longer running Herring Island Summer Arts Programme we stepped up and started running exhibitions in the gallery "who wouldn’t?" we thought! The environmental sculpture park and gallery is a gift to Victoria and the art world. After two exhibitions we figured that we needed support from other arts groups and the collaboration that is the Herring Island Summer Arts Festival came to be.

I was there at the start as the ASV delegate and coordinator of the ASV show – I’ve had a ball – not to mention a few very relaxed lunches in the courtyard while the sitters got on with interacting with our visitors and talking about the art.

SCULPTURE RESIDENCY IN TOOLANGI FOREST

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: SCULPTURE RESIDENCY IN TOOLANGI FOREST, VICTORIA
5 - 20 NOVEMBER 2016

The Toolangi Sculpture Trail was created in November 1996 by artists from the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, working with materials found in the Toolangi Forest.

To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this unique undertaking, Victorian artists are invited to submit applications for a 2-week residency in the Toolangi State Forest, producing site specific sculpture from materials found in the forest which will be gifted to the people of Victoria.

Concerns relating to the forests of the world are elevated today and highlight the importance of this residency.

Congratulations to all who took part in the International Flower and Garden Show. I have received many messages complimenting us on the organisation, quality and standard of work. So thanks to all who presented their sculptures and of course our gratitude to Mark Cowie for managing such a brilliant show even though the weather was not on our side.

Annual and Awards Sculpture Exhibition

We have good news regarding the Annual and Awards Sculpture Exhibition:

The same venue as last year has been secured at Bourke Place, 600 Bourke St, Melbourne. It is a little earlier in the year than the previous annual, running from Mon 8th to Frid 26th August 2016.

The March Meeting - visiting Bruce Armstrong in his Studio

The large workshop in Cremorne, once a car repair joint, is filled with a range of timbers in various forms, roughly sawn, whittled, tooled, carved, sculpted. Works finished, are nestled amongst the beginnings of the execution of another idea. The scent of timber and oils fills my nostrils as I wander through the maze of logs and sheets of jarrah, red gum, oak and other timbers, which are clustered throughout the space. In one corner there is a cleared space – paints and brushes are on the table together with a visual diary.

Celebrating Sculpture at MIFGS 2016

On Wednesday evening 16th March there was a viewing of the exhibition followed by the presentation of the prizes as judged by Penny Teale, Senior Curator at McClelland Gallery.

February Letter from the President

Dear Members and Friends,

In Sculpere May 2013 I discussed art as a means of communication. I would like to revisit that subject again in a small way with the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show around the corner. I am sure Mark Cowie has once again put together a great exhibition. Now it is the exhibitors turn. Apart from entering our work we can really communicate through it, ensuring the success of the exhibition. It is I know a great opportunity to meet other sculptors and compare notes and learn new techniques but it is also a great time to talk to the public about our work about sculpture and help to promote the Association of Sculptors.. So please let us enjoy our experience passing around peoples choice voting slips and sharing and selling our art.
