 Sculptors Come to Toolangi Forest

This November the beautiful Mountain Ash forests of Toolangi will provide the backdrop and inspiration for Toolangi Sculpture Trail 2016, an event conceived to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the International Sculpture Event UNESCO, 1996. 20 years on the trail still endures and from 6-20 November it will become a hub of artistic and environmental activity.

Toolangi Sculpture Trail Inc are proud to announce that 15 artists from Victoria have been selected by Maudie Palmer AO, Associate Professor Rob Haysom and sculptor Savaad Felich to create site-specific artwork in a two week residency in the sculpture trail. The program is unique in that all the artists will work with natural materials sourced mostly from the surrounding Toolangi State Forest. They will draw from the scope of ISE 1996 creating permanent or ephemeral work that will form a second stage in the creative story of this landscape.

The artists selected for the residency program include: Aaron Carter, Ali Griffin, Brigit Heller, Brooke Collins, Carmel Wallace, Christen Jo Stone, Forest Keegel, Gay Chatfield, Isadora Vaughan, Joanne Mott, Klara Kelvy, Marynes Avila, Mick Harding, Mike Nicholls, and Scott Selkirk.

TST16 will be opened to the general public on Sunday 6 November through a Tanderrum hosted by the Taungurung (Daung Wurrung) people of the Kulin Nation, welcoming artists and visitors alike to country. The audience will be able to directly experience the creation of contemporary art in the forest through daily guided tours of the trail and through the opportunity to contribute to a collective community sculpture. Visitors can also participate in environmental art workshops, learn Indigenous weaving and stories of country, hear artist and environmentalist talks, take day and night tours of the forest, and much more!

TST16 follows on from remarkable creative initiatives that have paved the way for recovery from the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009. Some workshops will be held specifically for schools and youth groups of the region with their work being installed alongside that of the artists in residence in the trail.
