A short note from the President

My first letter for the news letter will be brief. It will be difficult to write letters as inspiring and informative as Jan Indrans has written for the past year. At this point I would like to thank him for his contribution as President of the Association while trying to balance a busy family life.

Notes from the formal 2015 AGM

We did have a formal business meeting for the AGM. The financial report is available on the website and can be posted to anyone requesting it. Our 2015 president Jan Indrans gave a president’s report for the year and other office bearers reported on the exhibitons we have run, the newsletter and website and our activities program for 2015.

Bruce Armstrong - our speaker at the 2015 AGM

The AGM held on Nov 11th was opened with a rousing address by sculptor Bruce Armstrong.

Bruce Armstrong is a Melbourne artist trained in fine art at RMIT, who has been carving, painting drawing and printmaking for over 30 years. He is basically a studio artist with several high profile public sculpture commissions to his credit.

Entry forms for both these exhibitions have been posted to you. Here are the dates:

Herring Island 16 to 31 January 2016 including an event on Australia Day. There will be a pre-Christmas drop off on 19th December at 10am for those people who can’t be there on 15th January. We need sculptors to demonstrate any form of sculpture (non lethal) or for floor talks. Contact Jenny 0418 971 897. Entries close 4th December 2015

MIFGS: 16 to 20 March 2016 This is the one where over 100,000 people come to see your work - Mark needs a full team of sitters, demonstrators and helpers on the range of tasks that make this show great. Entries close 12 February 2016

The 10th Edition of the Florence Biennale took place in the Fortessa Da Basso in Florence Italy from 17th to the 25th October 2015.

Congratulations Betty!

The Biennale is not a selling exhibition but aims to display the trends in art work from around the world at the present time, to use art as a communicator and as a uniting force. People come from all over the world to view the exhibition.

Touch plays an integral role when it comes to our sculptural endeavours and as mentioned in a previous article it allows the senses to explore another dimension of our work. Interestingly some materials such stone, bronze , steel etc., cry out to be touched and experienced. According to a recent Guardian Weekly ‘Culture’, article, ‘"Sight has not always been the predominant sense. The owners of the first cabinets of curiosities – the forerunners of museums in Europe – urged the privileged few to handle their precious objects.

The Interesting bits and pieces - including exhibitions to enter

This newsletter is a little out of the usual order - I could say it's to keep you on your toes but anyone who has been out howling at the moon will understand...

The wheels are now in motion, somewhat unbelievably, for the preparation of the exhibition for the forthcoming ASV MIFGS Sculpture Exhibition, which will be held from 16th to 20th March 2016, which is a little earlier than is usually the case.

As much as I have enjoyed the opportunity over a number of years to present a professionally organised and curated exhibition to members, I would like to inform you that the next ASV MIFGS Sculpture Exhibition will be my final in the role of curator. It is definitely time to hand the baton on to someone or others to progress the exhibition into its next phase/era.

Tesselaar Sculpture Prize 2015

The outstanding visual delight of looking at the many rows of very colourful tulips rippling across the fields is a challenging context in which to place sculpture.

The growing interest in and ongoing success of the Tesselaar Sculpture Prize is due to the imagination, flights of invention, highly-skilled and dedication of the sculptors presenting their works for exhibition. And into its eighth year it continues to be an honour to curate this exhibition and competition, viewed by over 100,000 people each year.

Report on the Annual and Awards Exhibition 2015

Although sales were disappointing I believe our 2015 Annual and Awards Exhibition was a great success. I hope all who entered work found it a worthwhile and enjoyable experience and those members who did not enter were inspired to do so next year.

Thanks to all who helped in the organisation, the set up and bump out and sitting of the exhibition. I also thank all entrants for their cooperation in observing the conditions by which we had to abide. I hope you all enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of like-minded people as much as I did.

Our venue was great - kindly supported by the staff and management at Bourke Place.

We had a long list of thanks - art is definitely a team effort. And then we got on to presenting the prizes:

I could not but note with interest that on visiting one of the larger hardware stores that they stock and retail 3d printers. Primarily aimed at the building trade I feel that they will be taken up by the home handyman and also by someone like myself who is constantly on the look out for tools and material to assist me in my creative endeavours.

With the Annual fast approaching my thoughts are with how works are presented. As artists we can often overlook the way our work is packaged, Andy Warhol made a whole art form out of this word. It is all too easy to lose ourselves in our creative process and detach our connection with the world. Let the art speak for itself I hear some of us say although true, our art can sometimes appear a little lost when set down in the field of opportunity.

Annual and Awards Exhibition 2015 - 600 Bourke Street Melbourne

Life is frantic for the Annual Exhibition team - Gillian is pulling everything together - and only she knows how big EVERYTHING is!

The visit to Meridian Foundry was great. I have never had any experience with doing bronze work. It was interesting to see the different stages of process to get to the final bronze. An extremely time consuming process. I can now justify the $ value of a bronze sculpture. The people working at the foundry all seem to have a passion in what they are doing.

The new knowledge gained is always an inspiration.

Thanks Gillian for organising this excursion. Appreciated.

Artist’s Moral Rights Success

On Saturday Aug 1st, the Age ran a large story about the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute’s centenary which included a photo of my sculpture which commemorates Clunes Mathison, the Institute’s first appointed director. He was killed at Gallipoli before he could take up his appointment.

The Age published the journalist’s and the photographer’s names, but not mine as the sculptor.

Pricing Sculpture for Exhibition

It is Annual Show time and we all have the matter of working out what price we should put on our pieces.

Over the years a number of people have asked me how to work this out. My response is always that it should start with an objective calculation as to what it should bring and then a subjective decision as to what you think is reasonable.

Well things are moving along and the entries are trickling in. Thanks to all those who have sent in their forms and images. Please remember that we need some really good images for the invitations and catalogue designs.

Much of the effect of this policy is hard to define since the finer details of how it will be administered are not yet known. However, there are a number of elements in principle, which are most disturbing.

The most concerning factors are:-

This appears to be a politicisation of arts funding. The setting up of a new arts funding body under the direct control of the Minister appears to be a mechanism for the Minister to fund arts organisations, individuals and styles or movements which are favoured by the Minister, compared to the at-arms- length approach which has characterised the Australia Council.

It is the age old question: What really constitutes a sculpture?

I have already experimented with both Paper Mache & Paper Plaster sculpture. As simple mediums, I believe they allow artists to create art without a lot of expensive tools & infrastructure?

My granddaughter’s 2nd grade class would certainly argue that their ‘Frodo Frog Sculpture I helped them to create in polystyrene, newspaper & low aspect fibre plaster, is for them – genuinely a sculpture.

Bulleen Art and Garden Celebrates

Bulleen Art And Garden has always aimed to meet the community’s needs in its own unique way, and over the last 20 years art became an important part of this process. BAAG is situated in an area with a rich art history and tradition, being the birthplace of the Heidelberg school artists, and just around the corner from Heide. There are also many practising artists living and working close by.

The June Meeting

A full house of interested members attended the ASV meeting held on June 10th to see and hear the presentation by Iranian ceramic artist Elnaz Nourizadeh. Born in Tehran in 1985, Elnaz arrived in Melbourne in 2003. Pottery and ceramics were her early interest and passion and in Iran she was fortunate to study under the supervision of Maryam Salour one of Iran’s leading ceramists and sculptors. Elnaz continued to work as her assistant until she came to Australia.

We not only have a tremendous venue for the Annual Exhibition and Awards at 600 Bourke Street (Bourke Place) we also have the dates: 28th September to 16th October.

Entry forms are prepared and on the ASV website. They will be posted out with your membership renewals - probably to arrive on Friday 3 July!

Our opener will be Andrew Rogers - creator of geoglyphs and all round international artist... his work is on show at McClelland Gallery - see later in the newsletter.

The external judge for the Andor Meszaros Prize is Graeme Wilkie, Art Director of Qdos Gallery in Lorne.

This year work will be shown in two sections only - with sculptors’ work grouped together where possible. We hope that this will make the layout more comprehensible to our visitors and look forward to feedback from sculptors. There will need to be adjustments to the judging to accommodate this - stand by for further information.

In the mean time - get working, get images and entries in, it will be a great show!

A View from the Chair

Now that the ASV Annual has finally found a location at 600 Burke Place, Melbourne and dates finalized 28th Sept. to 16th October members will no doubt be contemplating and creating pieces for this prestigious show. With that in mind I am keen to impart my line of thinking regarding fabrication of sculpture and the copying of artwork.

So on Wednesday 10th June Elnaz - and all the rest of you ceramicists are invited to swap notes in a show and tell session. We not only have a tremendous venue for the Annual Exhibition and Awards at 600 Bourke Street (Bourke Place) we also have the dates: 28th September to 16th October

More information about installation and Opening night later but in the meantime have a great time being creative. The venue is huge, light and visible from Bourke Street so we would like some really stunning large works as well as your usual high standard for window displays. Entry forms will be sent to you with your membership renewal at the end of June and we are looking forward to some great images of your work. We hope a few of you will put up you hands to do some small tasks to make this a truly wonderful exhibition.

Writers block is a phenomena that often occurs in my creative pursuits and sadly that occurrence is affecting the writer of this article. Therefore I will grab what ever is at hand as I sometimes do in my art and see if these bits will contribute to a cohesive whole.

13 May monthly meeting at the Ashburton Baptist Church Meeting Rooms a talk from Brian Mc Loghlin of CMP stone www.cmpstone.com.au. We hope that members will bring in their work in stone and exchange views on techniques and tools - it should be a great night for carvers - and for the rest of us to learn.

Mark Cowie

MIFGS this year was an undoubted success, $20,000 of sales on the first day. This show occupies a prime position in the Carlton Gardens and is very much our show case to the world if not then to Melbourne at large. Once again the diversity of work on display made sure that there was something of interest for everyone. I would like to congratulate all exhibitors and prize winners and give a big thanks to Mark Cowie for organising such a slick show and my gratitude to Jackie McKinnon and Bronwyn Culshaw for stepping up to the mark at short notice to run publicity.

Early morning at MIFGS 2015

The level of interest displayed by the tens of thousands of viewers of the 107 sculptures at this year’s ASV MIFGS Sculpture Exhibition was extraordinary and a testament to the myriad of creative endeavours among ASV members and fellow sculptors. At the close of the exhibition almost 20% (17) of all works had been sold, creating sales of almost $28,000.

The March meeting was a second visit to McClelland Gallery Sculpture Survey. Some 17 members and guests attended and many enthusiastically sent images and reports.

Could all sculptors please check their profile pages - when the website was reset recently the "works to commission" and "runs classes" options were set to the default of NO. In order to fix this could you email membership@sculptorsvictoria.asn.au with your correct information and we’ll gradually get the system in order. It is worth checking from time to time - we only found out this time because we had an inquiry from the public.

JUDGING RESULTS SCULPTURE
MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN SHOW 2015

On the evening if 25th March, Judge Gael O'Leary announced the prizes in the three sections of the sculpture exhibition at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2015. Congratulations to all the winners - and the all the sculptors contributing work to this show - a great achievement!
