The May Meeting

Brian McLoghlin explaining
the finer points of chisels
The May meeting held on May 13th was well attended to hear a presentation by Brian McLoghlin the National Sales Manager of CMP Stonemason Supplies based in Hallam Victoria. Brian brought with him a wide range of hand tools, chisels and stone splitting equipment, he explained the use of each piece of equipment to members. This opened up a lively question and answer session between Brian and active stone carvers at the meeting, Jenny Whiteside, John Bishop and Daniel Worth, each of whom contributed their own very valuable practical information to the meeting. How best to carve different types of stone were discussed including major types such as granite, hard stone and soft stone. Advice on how best to carve some stone like limestone, sandstone and others that members are likely to use in Australia were discussed. This included what is needed to carve each of the four types of stone which come from Chillagoe, which includes Persian White, Carrara Gioia Venatino, Calacatta Oro, and Crystal Grey. Also the marble and granite types from Cairns which are popular in Australia.
