Touch plays an integral role when it comes to our sculptural endeavours and as mentioned in a previous article it allows the senses to explore another dimension of our work. Interestingly some materials such stone, bronze , steel etc., cry out to be touched and experienced. According to a recent Guardian Weekly ‘Culture’, article, ‘"Sight has not always been the predominant sense. The owners of the first cabinets of curiosities – the forerunners of museums in Europe – urged the privileged few to handle their precious objects. In the 17th Century visitors to the salons of France’s royal academy were allowed to hold or touch works, the better to appreciate them." There is no doubt that after we have made a sale the purchaser is free to handle the artwork in some cases as he or she chooses. With the exception of a few galleries such as the Modern Art Museum of Barcelona where certain exhibits could be handled and a number of specific exhibition and installations, sadly there is not much opportunity for the public or the disabled to feel art on another level. Dare I suggest that it may be a reflection of our present day culture that we ourselves don’t want to be touched unless we know who it is and so we seek an unwholesome comfort by creating walls and go to live in sterile boxes that shut out the world.
It is in this light that I wish to draw you out of your shells dear members for you to connect with the workings of our Association at the forthcoming AGM on the 11th November, 7.30 pm Ashburton Baptist Church Hall. Consider it a yearly gathering of the clans, where your can let out your grievances if you have any, elect a new chieftain as this one is going bush, You can put yourself forward and help shape the Association’s future. I urge you young bloods (or old bloods) and new members to take on committee positions for the old one’s are ready to pass the baton in pursuit of our vision. They will be willing to mentor you in any ASV role.
Thank you and well done for those that took part in the recent Annual it was an eye catching show in a new location. Although we did not make any huge sales it is worth considering that we may have the same venue next year in which case there is time now to develop networks and publicity strategies to build on for a more successful show in 2016. In the meantime Herring Island is around the corner and MIFGS is not far away so stay posted.
