A huge thank you to Jude Bridges-Tull for organising the outing and managing a group of sculptors.
The exhibition is worth a visit not only for its artistic value but also for its historic context: Barbara Hepworth is noted as the first British female sculptor to achieve International recognition.
I had a few reflections on the visit:
So many of the sculptors hadn’t seen the newsletter notices of the outing and only came as the result of the final reminder notice, some even by word of mouth after a friend alerted them to the outing... well we still had a good turn out so we are reaching more of you.
Exhibitions of sculpture are a cultural good.... thousands of people will have seen this exhibition by the time it ends on 13 March. When we run an exhibition we are providing an experience to our visitors - they would not visit otherwise.
It was a great experience reflecting on the life and struggles of another artist - all our lives are different but none are totally without adversity.
We learn from each other’s work - not by copying but by empathising with the techniques and styles that people invent to say new things or express old thoughts in new ways. We learn about our own work from seeing it in exhibitions and seeing it through our colleagues’ eyes.
And everyone in the group had different reflections - diversity is awesome.
I’m looking forward to our next outing to McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery on 2nd March. Not only to see the art but to hear what my colleagues have to say about it.
Thank you Jude and Gillian for taking on ASV meetups - it will be an exciting year.
