Our end of year celebration was a great success - we gathered for the first time in a couple of years and Jon Eiseman gave us a talk that was long promised and long postponed due to one thing and another - some Covid thing I believe. Jude Bridges-Tull (and Kerry) hosted the gathering and Gillian Govan welcomed us all - because Gillian has been promising us this talk for years. What an awesome Activities Team they make! And of course Jon’s talk was an inspiration - he took us into his making process, his philosophy and ideas - thank you Jon.

Dear Sculptors,
Entries are open for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) ASV sculpture exhibition for 2023. Planning has already commenced, and IMG are working hard to make it a bigger and better event. Our new site will be reconfigured to improve the demonstration area and better traffic flow.
Pamela Irving (Pamela Irving) has kindly agreed to be the judge for the exhibition. Pamela has been a full-time artist for over 30 years and is best known for her sculpture Larry La Trobe, her bronze dog sculpture, situated in front of the Melbourne Town Hall,
Herring Island
Herring Island
Entries have closed for the exhibition on Herring Island - we have forty works to show and the pre Christmas drop off was accomplished in fine weather and much camaraderie.
The gallery on Herring Island provides a venue for one of our indoor exhibitions and a great place to exhibit smaller works in an intimate space. The gallery courtyard is a great space for our hospitality and demonstration events. And most of all the bushland surrounding and the permanent collection of sculptures provides a relaxing networking opportunity for all of us.
Do please come and visit us on the island - it is a relaxing place and will give us time and space to talk to one another and exchange news and views.Member's News

There are 4 members in it: Susie Ashkenazi, Tania Stavovy, Eva Ermer, and (not 100% sure but) new member Janice Whetton.
Opening Thursday 15, 6-8pm everyone is welcome. The exhibition stays open for 5 weeks.
It’s an excellent place to wander around to see not only the Summer Series but an old warehouse now running loads of different art making as well as old curios and new bric a brac, and that barbed wire lantern you’ve always wanted.

Just in from a friend:
In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint)
Maybe true? maybe not?
Christmas Greetings from the Editor
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.
I hope you all have a happy and wonderful experience.Letter from the President
Hello Sculptors,
It’s warmer now and spring has blessed our Port of Sale exhibition with sunshine and happy visitors.
I must say - I love work - I could watch it all day! The planning and organising and pressure for Sale came together in a beautifully orchestrated effort. First the site induction and then the team sprang into action for the large outdoor works. Check the social media: Aukje recorded the arrival and installation of “Gypsy of the Deep” Sam Anderson’s whale shark. The WSC ground staff were a joy to witness.

Greetings! “Where did I learn to understand sculpture? In the woods by looking at the trees, along roads by observing the formation of clouds, in the studio by studying the model, everywhere except in the schools.” Auguste Rodin Gunnel is travelling in Italy and delighting in immersing herself in its culture, landscape and art. President’s Notes
Greetings! We are halfway through the year -JULY! There is much to celebrate – we have been contributing to the artscape of Victoria....Herring Island, MIFGS, the Backyard and Garden Show and Our Annual at the VAS have brought us together, and we have been able to share many happy moments doing what we love to do. This president’s spiel (below) will focus on the outcomes of the July Committee meeting to keep you all in the loop....we will be brief, if you require more information on any of the points we are an email away. We won't post this in every Newsletter but we think you all should have the opportunity to get an update now and again. The AGM will be held on 12th October, until then the Committee Team will be headed by Bruce A/P , Gillian A/VP and Gunnel being Ccd overseas; John R, Treasurer, John B Secretary / Public Officer plus our Committee members, this meets the requirement of our Constitution Tom Bass quote of the month: ‘Sculpture is drawing in three dimensions’. |
I was recently a visitor to the NGV Picasso Century in Melbourne. This is certainly worth a visit just to experience the fabulous 3D drawings and the forms evident in most of the 2D work. The exhibition closes 9th October. Visitors have the opportunity to discover a rich selection of works by artists rarely exhibited in Australia, including Natalia Goncharova, Julio González, Wifredo Lam, Suzanne Valadon and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Alberto Giacometti. |

DGR Charity Status – the next step is to a) request input from legal expertise/ and or change our Constitution....we are working on both fronts.
Website Brief for new website – this has hit a bit of a stalemate...we are progressing slowly. This still hinges on grant applications. In the short term the front page will get a spring clean. Alberto and Jenny need to be commended for their ongoing efforts.
MIFGs report – tabled at last meeting and a list of improvements have been agreed to. Paul is already planning next year's event. His work and commitment we commend. He is an important team member with valued skills. MIFGs outcome was also to document an end-of-exhibition reporting proforma to assist with this activity and also planning an event
