From the President: April 2016

Dear members, 

We cooperate as an association to advance the practice of sculpture and the reputation and appreciation of sculpture and sculptors in the community.

This is regardless of whether or not we make a living from sculpture and regardless of our preferred style or medium.

To this end we support artists’ moral rights; we advocate a professional attitude to the production and presentation of work and encourage the artistic and intellectual stimulation of interaction amongst artists of all persuasions.

 

The above is our philosophy. Most of our members would agree that with the informative newsletters about opportunities around Australia and within the association, a regularly updated website, meetings and visits to sculptor’s studios and a professionally run Exhibitions programme with prizes, not to mention the friendships formed we certainly fulfil this philosophy.

On Sunday 15 May: there will be a workshop run by Andrew Bryant

Located in beautiful Boneo is a farm and studio where Andrew Bryant creates his work. We have been invited to a workshop on Sunday 15 May 2016 to try our skills at tig and mig welding, plasma cutting and core drilling.

This is a year when obituary writers are crowding each other out of the papers: a couple of days ago we lost Inge King and during last week I was notified that former member Alwyn Harbott had passed away in March - we’ll publish obituaries when we can.

Calling it Time

Back in 2004 when members of the ASV discovered that Maudie Palmer was no longer running Herring Island Summer Arts Programme we stepped up and started running exhibitions in the gallery "who wouldn’t?" we thought! The environmental sculpture park and gallery is a gift to Victoria and the art world. After two exhibitions we figured that we needed support from other arts groups and the collaboration that is the Herring Island Summer Arts Festival came to be.

I was there at the start as the ASV delegate and coordinator of the ASV show – I’ve had a ball – not to mention a few very relaxed lunches in the courtyard while the sitters got on with interacting with our visitors and talking about the art.
