"Creativity takes courage." - Henri Matisse

Last weekend I took myself on the train to Kyneton and visited Jason Waterhouse’s exhibition “Slump” in the Kyneton stockroom. It was the second last day of the exhibition and that reminded me of the coffee cup slogan - if it weren’t for the last minute nothing would ever get done. Life is like that for most of us - and sometimes the last minute slips by with that famous whooshing sound and leaves us in its wake.

Gallery One at the Kyneton Stockroom had been painted a uniform white for Jason’s exhibition. Combined with uniform lighting the effect was to lose focus on walls and edges of the space - I felt as if the exhibition leapt out at me from a whiteout fog.

The works are plant images. Some lost plants in bronze, some modified plant material with juxtaposed objects. Looking at the signature work for the exhibition “Slump” https://stockroomspace.com/jason-waterhouse-artworks/slump - I’ve walked amongst snowgums and they do form that sort of shape and feeling and here it is pushed into an emotion and set in a gallery.

The art in the piece “Grit” spoke to me about an interpretation - of reflecting on the power of plants and the delicacy of individual seedlings..

Later this year, if we are lucky, we’ll get another visit to Sculpture Co where Jason Waterhouse is a director. Don’t miss this - the whooshing as you miss that opportunity won’t be a fun sound

The entry forms for the Castlemaine exhibition are on the website. Next November should be a great time to catch up with our Castlemaine colleagues. Try to arrange some time to stay in the area and explore, not to mention socialise. The history of the Castlemaine Market Building is interesting in itself.

And of course we are reaching that time of year when we plan the Annual General Meeting and the Members’ end of year party… stand by for more information.

 Happy sculpting, Jenny Rickards, President
