Schulim Krimper: mid-century artist and master craftsman | Bayside City Council

Examples of his work were acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1948 and in 1951, an exhibition was mounted at Georges Gallery, Melbourne. Never before had furniture been presented in this way, as art, and Krimper recalled that, ‘On the first day three of the major pieces were sold. From then on people came to me.’

An exhibition was presented at the Rockefeller Centre, New York, in 1956 and in 1959, the National Gallery of Victoria mounted its first Krimper exhibition. The second, a memorial exhibition, was held in 1975. Major commissions included furniture for St Mary’s Cathedral in Hobart, 1961, and the chapel of St Mary’s College, University of Melbourne, 1964.

Krimper died in Melbourne in 1971
