Meet Hector – an Andean bear with a story to tell.

“Cindy here. I'm a sculptor and artist. You may recall me from Gael's Bayside Sculpture workshops or the Association of Sculptors of Victoria or the Victorian Artists' Society.

We're raising funds to bring Hector, a beautiful storybook about dementia, to life. Created by Island Tin Can, the story follows Hector is an old Andean bear who suffers from dementia as he tries to navigate his way through the Colombian jungle – a jungle he knew intimately well before the onset of
his condition. Accompanying him on the journey are three familiar bear cubs, of which he struggles to place who they are, but who in turn are aware of their father’s condition. The cubs (his two sons and daughter) learn to adapt to Hector's illness and help him live a life of dignity.

This tender tale is for families and friends affected by dementia—designed to spark conversation, build empathy, and reduce stigma.

The artwork created by Cindy Rodriguez, is sculpted from plasticine and then photographed to be incorporated into the book.

We’ve been selected for Creative Australia’s Match Lab program—every dollar you donate will be matched by the Australian Government, up to $3,000!

Help us publish the first edition of Hector and make this story accessible to the families who need it most.

Avis Designs Exhibitions

Firstly, I am so pleased to be part of Banyule‘s biggest community art exhibition. This year the community was invited to create artwork that responded to or inspired by the Heidelberg school of art. Would love to see you at the opening on 2 May from 6.30 to 8:30 PM, it runs from 3 May to the 22nd of May. I'm involved with the The Heide group concept that the effects we capture are only momentarily widely differing and fleeting. This resonates with me and the work I have submitted.

Secondly, I’m also very lucky to still be part of the Alphington Studios group even though I am now a neighbour! We will be exhibiting at the Yarra Sculpture Gallery in Collingwood and entitled very aptly Glimpse. Opening afternoon, Sunday 11th May 2-4pm and runs until the first of June.

Hope you can make it! For this one, it will be my 3-D work that I will be exhibiting.

Best Wishes, Avis

Here’s something different for such a creative group!
