“Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” – Chris Van Allsburg (from Polar Express)Let’s start the report on what we have done in the last month with the Annual General Meeting - at the end of October. We had a great talk by Michael Meszaros OAM - all those who stayed away missed a treat. There were the usual reports - we are running a break-even budget - balancing capital expenditure on such things as the website against our long term gains over the years.

Editor's note and president's letter for October
At the end of September I managed to see Shlomit Moria’s exhibition at Warburton Waterwheel (image left) … and then the turmoil of life took over and we all balanced on chaos.
The Castlemaine Market Building exhibition attracted an amazing response - in the end the committee decided to accept sculptors’ first (out of a potential three) entries only. The space is larger than the gallery on Herring Island but has a requirement for pedestrian access along the side walls for access to the tourist information centre and the first nations display - both in the side aisles of the building. The exhibition will be well worth visiting - but you’ll hear the whimpers from the coordinating committee who saw the second and third entries that won’t be in the final exhibition.

The Australian Club
The Australian Club has introduced an Artist in Residence Program, and 2026 will see the program in its third year. This annual grant program starts again in February 2026. It covers emerging as well as established artists. Details, including the application form are attached. We hope you might circulate this information to those within your organisation you feel might be suitable or interested in this program.Applications close Friday 12th December 2025.
Nature of program
The Artist in Residence program is designed to provide an opportunity for an emerging or recognised artist to increase their experience and raise awareness within the Club of their skill. They would contribute to the vibrancy and life of the Club through their art and interacting with members at specific events and more broadly. The artist should be inspired by the activities within the building, and be encouraged to interpret this, and the relevance of the day / time to their art. Leading up to appointments, the Club would actively promote the program and person selected, through regular Club promotional material and other means.New Members and Members' News

"Creativity takes courage." - Henri Matisse
Last weekend I took myself on the train to Kyneton and visited Jason Waterhouse’s exhibition “Slump” in the Kyneton stockroom. It was the second last day of the exhibition and that reminded me of the coffee cup slogan - if it weren’t for the last minute nothing would ever get done. Life is like that for most of us - and sometimes the last minute slips by with that famous whooshing sound and leaves us in its wake.
Gallery One at the Kyneton Stockroom had been painted a uniform white for Jason’s exhibition. Combined with uniform lighting the effect was to lose focus on walls and edges of the space - I felt as if the exhibition leapt out at me from a whiteout fog.

The chosen quote at the head of this newsletter really resonated with me - I have seen a lot of courage in the work in the Annual & Awards Exhibition. Congratulations to all exhibitors who took their ideas, their craftsmanship and their management skills to install finished work at the Victorian Artists Society. And we had a great range of work - Paul Jesse’s interactive kinetic work, Ioanna Thymianidis’s artificial reality, Marija Patterson’s intimate story telling beauty - I hope you have seen it all.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 23rd July 7.30pm at 20 England Street, Bentleigh East.

We had a fantastic presentation afternoon on the 22nd and we wish to congratulate all the winners. Some of the works are pictured here but the exhibition continues until the 29th so you still have time to come and have a look.

President's Letter for April 2025
Hello sculptors!
We have now rolled from MIFGS wrap up to preparation for the 2025 Annual & Awards Exhibition. The program is a bit compressed this year - we'll use the panic to raise our creativity to urgent and firey. Is your sculpture entry sorted? Have you decided which section is appropriate for your work? The deciding factor is years of sculpting experience. Even after 20 years a person can feel uncertain about their work - but step up! Be bold (and fair) and place your work where it will be judged amongst equals.
The two sections are judged under different systems:

The Annual and Awards Exhibition is the highlight of the year for the Association of Sculptors and entries are now open. It is an exhibition where members with over 10 years sculpture experience are judged by their peers and can be awarded the prestigious Margaret Gunnersen William Hoggan Thomas Award. The Andor Meszaros Award is an Encouragement Award for both members and non -members of the Association with fewer than 10 years sculpting. Other Awards include donations from Mal Wood Foundry, Dalchem suppliers of moulding materials, Art Almanac and a bequest from Valda Cuming and the People’s Choice Award. The 2025 exhibition will be held at the historic Victorian Artists Society Galleries and is coordinated by Paul Cacioli, assisted by Heather Wilson and supported by Gillian Govan.

I’m writing as we all prepare for MIFGS 2025 - the same efforts to get everything just right and to keep our colleague’s work in sync with our own. And as we work on MIFGS we are all aware that the work will be subtly different when we come to work on the Annual & Awards Exhibition in a few months time. And I am looking forward to seeing the diversity of media and ideas that 72 sculptors bring to the public at the Flower & Garden Show. We have visitors returning every year to be inspired, to enjoy and quite often to buy. The 100,000 visitors will usually deliver us people who love our work that much - a welcome reward for the effort, skill and ideas you put into your work. Next Thursday the extended committee will meet to discuss plans for the coming year. Momentous decisions will be referred to members - we will be considering the annual subscriptions and the programs of exhibitions, meetings and workshops. All of this is relevant to our practice of sculpture.
And in considering our activities - let’s agree that our greatest resource is in our membership - in its diversity and experience. If, for example, you want to know about designing and maintaining your own sculptor’s website, why not listen to the experience of your peers. You can find out about free and low cost platforms, the best way to take and manipulate images, registering a domain name, selling through your website or sending a newsletter to a mailing list…. Or even knowing what questions to ask in this weird world of cyberspace.
Other activities and workshops include, by request, another mold making workshop, studio and gallery visits and more - it is worth keeping in touch with your association… read your newsletter! And many thanks to Carmel for her work in producing it 😃
