Editor's Note and President's Letter

"Creativity takes courage." - Henri Matisse

President’s Message

I’m writing as we all prepare for MIFGS 2025 - the same efforts to get everything just right and to keep our colleague’s work in sync with our own. And as we work on MIFGS we are all aware that the work will be subtly different when we come to work on the Annual & Awards Exhibition in a few months time.

And I am looking forward to seeing the diversity of media and ideas that 72 sculptors bring to the public at the Flower & Garden Show. We have visitors returning every year to be inspired, to enjoy and quite often to buy. The 100,000 visitors will usually deliver us people who love our work that much - a welcome reward for the effort, skill and ideas you put into your work. Images will be online here https://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/virtual-exhibition/2025-melbourne-international-flower-garden-show/ once the Show begins.

President's Notes for February 2025

At this time of year many sculptors are putting work into their entries to the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. Creativity, skill and a possible level of panic are combining to bring the masterpieces to completion. Entries are due on Monday 3rd March.

Forms are available on https://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/exhibitions/application_forms

Next Thursday the extended committee will meet to discuss plans for the coming year. Momentous decisions will be referred to members - we will be considering the annual subscriptions and the programs of exhibitions, meetings and workshops. All of this is relevant to our practice of sculpture.

And in considering our activities - let’s agree that our greatest resource is in our membership - in its diversity and experience. If, for example, you want to know about designing and maintaining your own sculptor’s website, why not listen to the experience of your peers. You can find out about free and low cost platforms, the best way to take and manipulate images, registering a domain name, selling through your website or sending a newsletter to a mailing list…. Or even knowing what questions to ask in this weird world of cyberspace.

Other activities and workshops include, by request, another mold making workshop, studio and gallery visits and more - it is worth keeping in touch with your association… read your newsletter! And many thanks to Carmel for her work in producing it 😃

Herring Island "Sculpture in Place"

On 18/01/2025 ASV President Jenny Rickards officially opened the HERRING ISLAND Annual Arts Festival with 35 works from loyal and spontaneous members of the ASV - after ONLY one week’s Notice from Vic Parks!

It was an incredible feat by all concerned and huge praise to our amazing Pres! The very hot weather did not seem to deter visitors from everywhere in the world(!), many locals had never been to Herring Island OR the ASV Herring Island Sculpture Exhibition before! The majority were really impressed by the very high standard of workmanship, including the variety of mediums and subject matter. Quite a few works sold and we should see at least several new Members joining us, including lots of Newsletter subscribers who want to follow artists and future exhibitions - woo hoo!
