Studio Classes

A variety of classes are available; including life modelling, and open studio. Life modelling caters for students of all levels of experience seeking to develop their modelling and observation skills.

The small class size enables lively discussion about the fundamentals of sculpture, and students are encouraged to develop their creative potential within the limits of the medium.

Classes run Wednesday afternoon, Thursday evening and Saturday mornings and are limited to 12 students. Thursday evening and Saturday morning classes work from the life model in clay and each individual is encouraged to negotiate the scale that best suites them.

Mould making intensives will be available when required at the conclusion of each life modeling project. Students can then use the mould in subsequent terms to translate their work into bronze or alternative material.

The instructor Mark Henry’s involvement in the production of sculpture spans more than 40 years; his teaching technique enables you to develop your unique aesthetic language, encouraging your ability to ‘see’ and explore your unique creative expression.

Prospective students should make contact in order to find the right class to suit their needs and existing skills. Beginners are welcome in each setting and students are expected to set their own limits while being encouraged to extend their capacities.

A mould making and bronze casting service is available should students choose to be involved solely in the production of their original art works..

M~M2016
Geelong’s Extreme Arts Walk seeks lead artist for major Australian Ephemeral Sculpture Commission.

COMMISSION $20,000

Geelong’s Extreme Arts Walk – M~M2016 is now calling for artists based in Australia or overseas to submit an Expression of Interest for a major $20,000 Australian Ephemeral Sculpture Commission called "Canoe".

The Canoe Commission has been made possible by funding from the Australia Council for the Arts. As one of most unique ephemeral sculpture commissions now offered in Australia, the Canoe sculpture (Canoe) will be the lead processional artwork of M~M2016 (Mountain to Mouth) – Geelong’s multiaward winning 80km extreme arts walk.

As a biennial "journey of discovery" over two days (6 7 May), M~M2016 begins at the You Yangs mountain range, crossing Geelong’s industrial heartland at nightfall and arriving in the city centre to collide with Geelong After Dark, a night of extreme and unexpected arts. At dawn the next day, the extreme arts walk continues through the city centre to join the Barwon River, through rolling Bellarine farmland, along ocean beach to reach river mouth at Barwon Heads by sunset. M~M2016 is about land and people, and it’s about art bringing these two together. T he theme for M~M2016 is ‘AIR’.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST BY 8 FEBRUARY 2016.

Canoe will become the iconic image for M~M2016. The commission is for the design, construction, rehearsal and overseeing the procession of Canoe along the 80 kilometre walk, including Canoe’s involvement in three ceremonies. Canoe is set on fire during the final ceremony and therefore the materials f rom which the sculpture is created need to burn without toxic effect on the environment.

Expressions of Interest are invited from artists/sculptors/imagemakers experienced in three dimensional artworks. Experience in procession art and/or installation art is also desirable.

● Expressions of Interests must include:

○ Statement of Interest specific to the Canoe commission
○ Preferred medium
○ Curriculum Vitae
○ Up to 10 images of previous artworks
○ 2 3 reviews and/or examples of media coverage
○ Budget outline

● Collaborations will also be considered for this commission.
● The commission includes mentorship of an emerging Geelong regional artist(s) and may include 2 or 3 professional development workshops with a small group of professional artists.

● Expressions of Interest to be received by 8 February 2016 via email:
mtom@geelongcity.vic.gov.au or on USB or hard copy sent to:
M~M Project Manager,
Arts & Culture Department,
City of Greater Geelong.
