Spirit of the Land Lockhart Festival
We invite you and associates to participate in the Spirit of the Land Art Festival 2011, with a NATIONAL FARM ART SCULPTURE AWARD of $10,000 in prize money and additional $7000 in other awards.
The National Farm Art Sculpture Award is for sculptures created from recycled or new farm materials and/or any natural element of the land in a new art form called “farm art.” The Arts Festival includes three exhibitions held in Lockhart in the heart of the Riverina District of NSW, some 70 kms from Wagga Wagga and 90 kms from Albury/ Wodonga.
The exhibition categories are:
Sculpture (any medium, including Farm Art) and Fine Art (oil, water, clay, textiles, glass, ceramics, photography, multi-media) and
Indigenous art (cultural and contemporary), Secondary School (Totem Poles, Fine Arts), Primary Schools (Cardboard Totems) , Garden Art (any medium) and Silhouettes (Two dimensional life sized metal sculpture)
There are additional awards in some categories including a prize for a local artist who resides within 60kms of Lockhart.
Registration is open to emerging and established artists who can exhibit in any or all categories. There is no limitation on the number of entries. Entries close on 1st October 2011. A brief resume and personal photograph is requested for promotional purposes. The Festival will officially open on Friday 7th October 2011 and close on Sunday 9th October.
Exhibits can be collected on Sunday 9th October after 4pm. Work not sold may be considered by the Festival Arts committee for inclusion in Lockhart’s Sculpture Park for a period of up to three months. Unsold works can be posted on the website for sale. Standard commissions apply. Whilst all care is taken, artists are responsible for insurance. A Memorandum of Understanding outlines all parties’ responsibilities.

Prize winners will be announced on the night of Friday 7 October at the Spirit of the Land preview.

Early registration will assist with our national/ international promotional campaign and photographs of artworks would also be appreciated. These can be emailed or posted. The Festival has attracted international media crews from New Zealand, China, Brazil, UK, USA and Portugal.

Sculpture symposium opportunity in China
Those interested in the chance to work in China may want to consider “The 6th China (Hui’an) Carving Art Festival & International Stone Carving Competition” 6TH CCAF.
This symposium is sponsored by the Sculpture Professional Committee of China and the government of Hui’an County. The symposium will be held in Hun’an County of Fu Jian Province 25th September to 9th October, 2011.
The topic of this stone carving competition is “Stone’s Whisper in Sea Wind”.

Rachel: I became very interested in sculpture when I studied Art History as my major in a Bachelor of Arts degree at La Trobe University in 1982. Studying the work of so many wonderful artists, inspired me to do a practical course in art. I therefore completed a Bachelor of Education Art and Crafts course in 1987, and although my major was in painting in this four year course, I also did two years of sculpture; the second year studying with Fiona Orr, a very well known sculptor.
I only started doing sculpture seriously, when I joined a life model drawing, painting and sculpting group in 2005, and have been attending these sessions weekly ever since.
K & Z: What was it that drew you to this particular art form?
R: Sculpture for me presents a certain challenge, it has to be aesthetically acceptable from all views. Also the fact that it occupies,’ real’ space, as opposed to the two dimensionality of paintings on the wall, is interesting. I like using the many different materials, such as wax, foam, wire, and various ceramic mixes.
K & Z: Do you practice art in any other medium?
R: I paint in oils, pastels and acrylics, and have been doing this for over thirty years. I have had two solo painting exhibitions and have taken part in numerous group shows. My work is brightly coloured. Line, a sense of movement and an awareness of negative space are what I look for in my paintings, as well as in my sculpture. I regularly enter the Archibald Portrait Prize, and my work has been shown in the Victorian Hidden Faces of the Archibald Exhibition a number of times.
K & Z: Your bronze sculptures of figures on the Hawthorn studio website are reminiscent of sculptors such as Sir Anthony Caro. Who is it that inspires your work and why do you like to create such figures?
R: Every artist thinks his/her work as unique, and I would be no exception. My style of sculpture has evolved because I am interested in the basic essence of form and do not see the need to provide unnecessary detail. The artist I admire most would be the French painter, Fernand Leger, because he simplifi es form, and I like the logic of the figure placements in his work and the fl at use of colour. Depicting figurative form is of interest to me, because the interpretation can contain emotion, be abstracted and also be invested with movement and line. The figure in all its divisions of parts, can be manipulated and simplified. In my work I follow a, “ less is more”, principle.This is to pare down form, to suggest and never define, so the eye of the viewer can fill in what is not represented.

Australian Visual Artists’ Benevolent Fund
This fund provides limited financial assistance to visual arts practitioners faced with financial difficulty as a result of serious illness, accident or some other unexpected catastrophe. It is not intended that the fund should be used merely as a means of coping with financial hardship.
Applications can be made at any time.
This fund was established by painter and sculptor Bert Flugelman who during his career suffered severe personal disasters, which could have left him destitute, had it not been for the generosity of friends and colleagues in the art world. Assistance may be in the form of loans, advances, gifts or any other measures considered by the Trustees, at their discretion to be appropriate to the need of the beneficiary. If you wish to apply to the Benevolent Fund for assistance please send your application to the National Association for the Visual Arts outlining the nature of your adverse circumstances, how it affects your practice and required assistance.
Janet Holmes à Court Artists’ Grant & The Eckersleys Art Materials Prize for NAVA Members
The Janet Holmes à Court Artists’ Grant is designed to provide fi nancial assistance to professional artists for the public presentation of their work. This funding is made possible through a generous donation from Mrs Janet Holmes à Court and the support of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council.
Closing dates: 15 August and 15 November.
This grant provides assistance towards the costs of public presentation of visual arts, craft and design. This can include, but is not limited to, framing, media releases, media photographs, advertising, space rental, installation costs, promotional printing, mail outs, documentation, freight, travel, equipment rental, insurance, technical assistance and opening costs.
Amounts available are: $500 for individuals and $1,000 for groups. This grant does not provide assistance towards the production of artwork (materials, studio rental, research etc). Visual arts, craft and design are broadly defi ned and include: painting, printmaking, drawing, textiles, photo media, sculpture, mixed-media, installation, glass, ceramics, woodwork, jewellery, furniture, performance art, electronic and digital media.
Indigenous artists and artists from non-English Speaking Backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The award I received is called the National Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture and is awarded once a year to a medallic artist from anywhere in the world. The award is from an organisation in America, which is affiliated with FIDEM and is called the American Numismatic Association; it is based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Numismatic means to do with coins and medals. This organisation hosted FIDEM congresses in 1987 and 2007.The medal organisation FIDEM is the acronym of its original name ‘Federation International des Editeurs des Medailles. (It is now called ‘ The International Art Medal Federation’ and its web address is fi dem-medals.org). FIDEM is currently based in Finland.
As such, I am pretty chuffed about getting it. It seems to be a sort of lifetime award as I was asked to supply extensive details of my whole medallic career by the man who nominated me. It was presented last Thursday, 18th August at a coin and medal fair in Chicago and my cousin from New York went there to receive it for me. I have heard by email that it all seemed to go pretty well.

A new National Cultural Policy for Australia is being developed and Arts Minister Simon Crean has invited all Australians to comment. You can read and download the Discussion paper by going to http://culture.arts.gov.au/.
The last day to have your say is on Friday 21 October.
The Discussion Paper is 26 pages long and talks about how the Government is already involved in the Arts and what it’s aims are for the future. It is well worth reading and you may like to add something you feel the Government should consider.

Outdoor Sculpture
Tesselaar (in Silvan, in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges) annual sculpture exhibition and acquisitive prize is an adjunct to its well-established annual Tesselaar Tulip Festival, which is attended by 50,000 visitors during September and October. For the fourth annual ‘Tesselaar Sculpture Prize’ (hereafter the ‘Prize’) Tesselaar Direct Pty Ltd is offering an Acquisitive Award for a sculpture suitable to be exhibited and maintained permanently outdoors at its business location. This year’s prize-winner will be awarded $10,000 in prize-money.
The winning artist will assign a limited copyright licence to Tesselaar Direct Pty Ltd to allow fair and reasonable use of images of the work for reasons of publicity/promotion and publication.
The Association of Sculptors of Victoria Inc offer a second prize of $1,000.
Tesselaar will also provide a ‘People's Choice Award’ of $500, as well as a prize in-kind to the winning voter.
The Tesselaar Tulip Festival is open to the public seven days per week from 10:00am to 5:00pm for the duration of the Festival, Thursday, 15 September to Wednesday, 12 October 2011. Exhibition times will coincide with those of the Festival.

BUDAFEST GARDEN SCULPTURE EXHIBITION

The inaugural Budafest Garden Sculpture Exhibition will be held in the beautiful heritage gardens at Buda Historic Home & Garden at 42 Hunter Street Castlemaine, and will feature works by prominent regional sculptors – Kristina Browning, Mark Cowie, Maria Coyle, Yvonne George, Chelly and Peter Gray. Enjoying national and international reputations, these sculptors will be exhibiting works in mediums as diverse as metal, timber, ceramic and rusty wire. The exhibition opens on Saturday 20th August and concludes Sunday 4th September, and will include an artist ‘walk and talk’ as part of the Budafest ’11 program.

CONTEMPORARY ART SYMPOSIUM: BE HERE FOR WE ARE HERE
14 September 2011The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) and Firstdraft Gallery, a Sydney Artist Run Initiative (ARI) are bringing together leading emerging artists and members of the artist initiative sector for their first national conversation to re-imagine the future of contemporary art in Australia. It is expected that outcomes will include ideas for the National Cultural Policy and the formation of a national ARI network.
From September 1 4, the We Are Here (WAH) event will see the gathering together in Sydney of over 150 artists, thinkers, writers and ARI directors for a 2 day symposium, 1 day workshop, exhibition of 12 emerging artists at Firstdraft Gallery entitled The feeling will pass, artists talks, performances and a complete night time events program.
The symposium will combine international guest speaker presentations by Jonathan Middleton (Or Gallery, Canada), Reza Afisina (Ruangrupa, Indonesia) and Lois Keidan (Live Art Agency, UK), panel discussions, roundtables, Q&As, workshops and the Great Debate which poses the question Is it the responsibility of emerging artists to be innovative, experimental and ground-breaking?

Newcastle Steelworkers Design Project
From 1915 to 1999, covering 84 years of operations, an unknown large number of workers died from work injuries. There is no memorial dedicated to these workers. Newcastle Industrial Heritage Association Inc., a local community group, has initiated a project to construct a specific memorial to lives lost in the steel industry, on land and in the vicinity of the steel works site. A public fund raising project is in progress with a target of $60,000 to construct a large artistic memorial: Newcastle Steelworkers Memorial. Applications are invited from artists to register interest for the design, development and installation of a memorial to steel workers who lost their lives in the steelmaking industry in Newcastle from 1915 to 1999. The memorial will be located in parkland in the vicinity of the steelworks site. The first stage is a call for Expressions of Interest including a concept design: now open until Friday 16 September at 4pm.Newcastle Steelworkers Design Project
Four submissions will be offered a fee of $1,000 to submit a fully detailed design and costing, including a scale maquette by Friday 27January 2012.
