Editor's note and president's letter for October

“Painting is so poetic, while sculpture is more logical and scientific and makes you worry about gravity.”
— Damien Hirst

At the end of September I managed to see Shlomit Moria’s exhibition at Warburton Waterwheel (image left) … and then the turmoil of life took over and we all balanced on chaos.

The Castlemaine Market Building exhibition attracted an amazing response - in the end the committee decided to accept sculptors’ first (out of a potential three) entries only. The space is larger than the gallery on Herring Island but has a requirement for pedestrian access along the side walls for access to the tourist information centre and the first nations display - both in the side aisles of the building. The exhibition will be well worth visiting - but you’ll hear the whimpers from the coordinating committee who saw the second and third entries that won’t be in the final exhibition.

Other Opportunities

 The Australian Club

The Australian Club has introduced an Artist in Residence Program, and 2026 will see the program in its third year. This annual grant program starts again in February 2026. It covers emerging as well as established artists. Details, including the application form are attached. We hope you might circulate this information to those within your organisation you feel might be suitable or interested in this program.
Applications close Friday 12th December 2025.

Nature of program

The Artist in Residence program is designed to provide an opportunity for an emerging or recognised artist to increase their experience and raise awareness within the Club of their skill. They would contribute to the vibrancy and life of the Club through their art and interacting with members at specific events and more broadly. The artist should be inspired by the activities within the building, and be encouraged to interpret this, and the relevance of the day / time to their art. Leading up to appointments, the Club would actively promote the program and person selected, through regular Club promotional material and other means.
