Editor's note and president's letter for October

“Painting is so poetic, while sculpture is more logical and scientific and makes you worry about gravity.”
— Damien Hirst

At the end of September I managed to see Shlomit Moria’s exhibition at Warburton Waterwheel (image left) … and then the turmoil of life took over and we all balanced on chaos.

The Castlemaine Market Building exhibition attracted an amazing response - in the end the committee decided to accept sculptors’ first (out of a potential three) entries only. The space is larger than the gallery on Herring Island but has a requirement for pedestrian access along the side walls for access to the tourist information centre and the first nations display - both in the side aisles of the building. The exhibition will be well worth visiting - but you’ll hear the whimpers from the coordinating committee who saw the second and third entries that won’t be in the final exhibition.

In a week’s time we’ll have our Annual General Meeting. And we have a couple of enticing speakers to inspire you:

Michael Meszaros OAM will give us a look at his design approach for medallions - the stories, the many and varied ideas and the range of emotions in each microcosm.

Our website designer, Alberto Martinez will present the new website to you - how will it look and how will it work? Come along and see how it both presents our work to our visitors and enables us to record history as we make it.

Then the reports and the business of electing office bearers for 2026. We know you all have over-full lives and would much rather that Sculptors Victoria kept on doing what it does without asking difficult questions. You know that the work doesn’t happen by magic but… you can’t, right? You’ve seen the article in the Sculpere Newsletter appealing for you to find someone to take over as our treasurer… Please take it as a personal challenge to find someone who can help us carry on the work - not necessarily a sculptor but definitely someone who would like to exercise skill, enjoy camaraderie on committee, and support the arts. The link to attend the meeting online will be sent soon - for all those who can’t be there in person.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at the meeting - assuming that the local swooping magpies will let me out of the house.

Happy sculpting, Jenny Rickards, President
