Editor's Quote and President's Letter for June 2025

"Creativity takes courage." - Henri Matisse

The chosen quote at the head of this newsletter really resonated with me - I have seen a lot of courage in the work in the Annual & Awards Exhibition. Congratulations to all exhibitors who took their ideas, their craftsmanship and their management skills to install finished work at the Victorian Artists Society. And we had a great range of work - Paul Jesse’s interactive kinetic work, Ioanna Thymianidis’s artificial reality, Marija Patterson’s intimate story telling beauty - I hope you have seen it all.

ASV committee meeting - input welcome

Wednesday 23 July 2025 7:30pm

“Hi to all my sculpture friends,

I hope you can join me by an open fire and enjoy a glass of wine while we talk all things sculpture. It is always interesting to meet fellow sculptors and talk about new techniques, exhibiting experiences, how you promote your work and what your inspirations are for future works.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 23rd July 7.30pm at 20 England Street, Bentleigh East.

A plate of nibbles would be welcome and rsvp about 16th July.”

More coming up - stand by for details

We had a fantastic presentation afternoon on the 22nd and we wish to congratulate all the winners. Some of the works are pictured here but the exhibition continues until the 29th so you still have time to come and have a look.

Our judge Jason Waterhouse commented on the fact that it was a very difficult decision and as far as he is concerned everyone is a winner as the standard was so high. Again our major award winners received a beautiful medallion made by Michael Meszaros, thank you Michael for the medallions and for Judging.

Fay Gerber 100th Birthday

Our oldest and longest-standing member, Fay Gerber, will turn 100 on 26th July.

While she has not exhibited with us for some years, she has remained in contact with, and maintains an interest in, the Association and the activities of our members.

She became a member when the Victorian Sculptors Society, as we were then known, when it was re-formed after WWII in 1948. She exhibited with us for about 65 years, showing works in wood, ceramic, limestone and bronze.

Born in 1925, she commenced a 4 year art course at RMIT in 1944, straight after finishing school. As a general art course, Fay learned sculpture, including modelling, and building up concrete on an armature.
