President's Letter for June 2024

 Editor's inspiration for June:

“Painting is so poetic, while sculpture is more logical and scientific and makes you worry about gravity.”
 Damien Hirst

The Annual & Awards Exhibition marks the end of the financial year and the middle of the calendar year - all significant or symbolic or what you will… this is a time when we fulfil our promises: to finish work; to show that work to our peers and our visitors; and put our philosophies on the line.

Do take the time to view the exhibition - preferably in real life but it is also possible to see the work onlineFor each individual artist the deadline of the installation date is a cascade of planning and effort to bring the work to the point - and so it is for the exhibition team - with the coordinator at the helm. The longer someone stays in a role, the more they learn and the harder it is to imagine anyone else doing the work - well, here we are at the place where we need to recognise the experience and talent of our outgoing coordinator and set off on a new adventure for our Annual. Thank you Gillian.

Our next committee meeting is on the 18th of July. Call me before then if you want to share some thoughts or find out more.

Please keep “sharing” our exhibition amongst your friends… you never know who will find joy and inspiration! And perhaps “rattle the tin” amongst your Rotary-type friends who love organising good causes. We are not too proud to accept help and the Annual is a great place to chat.

Our judge, Jason Waterhouse was an inspiration at the presentation - an articulate and lively speaker he encourages everyone to be honest about what appeals to them in sculpture. He provided sound files of his comments on the prize winning pieces and these can be heard from the sculpture details pages on the online exhibition (and also in the online newsletter). From, let’s say, the middle of next year, the sculpture details pages in the normal exhibition records will carry the extra files - so fear not, they will not disappear into the ethereal plane never to be heard again.

I’ll look forward to some exciting sculptor chats at our “monthly “ meetings - we know what you do and we want to see more!

Happy sculpting

Jenny R
