 Sculpere Newsletter

February 2022

Dear Members,

The Association’s exhibition at the Herring Island Summer Festival was successfully concluded. Jenny Rickards did a great job of coordinating under these trying times.

Thank you to all who participated….sculptors, volunteers and visitors!

MIFGS is fast approaching, so don’t forget to put in your entries. Also, we are in need of members to demonstrate their talents at the show. Please contact Paul Cacioli if you are willing to spare an hour on one or more of the days during the show to run a demonstration or workshop.

The Committee is working on updating our vision statement to make it more relevant to our current environment and streamline the list of existing and planned services we provide to members. We are actively working on modernising our website and the functions it can perform, particularly the members’ area.

The social media group have and continue to do a great job promoting our Association and the events we are involved with.

We have some exciting visits to artist’s studios coming up and we would welcome suggestions for other visits or activities that we could then offer to our members.

Looking forward to working with you in improving the Associations image and activities.

Best wishes

Paul Cacioli

Team Leader, Presidents Team.

  • Could you please send me one or two images of work you will be submitting as well as a short paragraph either about yourself or the work or both, that we could use for social media. It will be a great opportunity to not only promote the exhibition but you and your work.
  • Can I have this information as soon as possible.
  • We are also organising demonstrations during the show. The time slots are 11.00 to 12.00pm and 2.00pm to 3.00pm each day. Studio Visit

  Special visits to Studios

  • Studio of Alex Goad
  • The opportunity to visit the studio of Alex Goad was included in January’s edition of the Sculpere newsletter.

  • When reading about Alex Goad and Reef Design lab I was inspired by their clarity of intention and purpose. I think as sculptors our 'niche' is sometimes obscure and the 'demographic' our work appeals to unclear. Their main goal is clear, it is environmental and their niche unique...and they make a difference. I think the conversation around ‘niche’ and ‘demographic’ is an interesting one and food for further thought.  Gunnel Watkins

  • Reef Design Lab enter into partnerships around the world  to support marine research and to find solutions that will  benefit the marine environment. They 'develop techniques for enhancing the ecological performance of marine structures and to create more effective habitat solutions'.

  • Don’t miss this great opportunity Alex has agreed to talk to us about how he came to start this project, how he has used clay and 3D printing to achieve an aid for restoring our marine life. It will be interesting to visit a studio where the use of 3D printing is extensive and is used  to minimise cost while increasing design complexity.

  • Studio Visit: Wednesday 23rd Feb
  • We will meet at his studio at 7.30pm
  • 61 Southern Rd Mentone
  •

ASV News

  •  ASV Artists’ News
  • A special message from Gillian Goven, past President of the ASV
  • Just prior to Christmas the Committee plus spent a very pleasant evening around a dinner table. During the evening I was humbled and delighted to be given a gift from the Association of Sculptors to thank me for my time as president.

  • The renewal of my NGV membership, a visit to Risings in the Ballroom at Flinders Street Station and a voucher for a meal at Coda restaurant are all so very much appreciated.

  • Being president wasn’t always easy, but I learnt such a lot, met many wonderful people and I really think I got more from being president than I gave. It has been a wonderful experience. The Association is a very important part of my life and I will continue on the committee and assist where I am needed.

  • Thanks to you all.

  • ASV Website

  • At the moment the ASV committee is reviewing the website with a view to a major overhaul. The existing site is becoming unreliable in terms of member logins and other useful operations. A full report will come out later.
  • On the other hand the online exhibition facility is working well and supporting our exhibitions admirably. This has given us an opportunity to differentiate between records of exhibitions and actual live exhibitions - in the live exhibition we can sell the work through our system and the coordinator can answer queries from visitors, in the records visitors can do research or browse and contact a sculptor through the contact form.
  • Two modifications to our current system are in hand:
  • One is to acknowledge any technical support involved in producing the work - this can assist the visitors in understanding how a work might be made and what costs and expertise may have come from outside the studio. We already have this facility in our printed catalogues. We’ll be adding this field into both the records and the online exhibition soon.
  • Next to the matter of recording the price of a recorded sculpture: in an exhibition a work can be Not For Sale, or for sale at the best price the sculptor can offer given that the ASV commission is frequently smaller than commercial galleries need to charge, or, historically, the price can vary from one exhibition to the next - mostly it will increase - as a sculptor matures and understands the price implications of their expertise and expression.
  • The big picture is: if there is a price on a work it is represented as for sale at that price. This is true in online exhibitions but possibly not true in the records of exhibitions. So we are removing the price field from the record of exhibitions so that the online exhibition and the live exhibition are the only places where a price is shown and the sculpture can be bought through the ASV system.

  • How Do You Read The Newsletter?
  • A thousand different angles
  • 21 February – 5 June 2022
  • A thousand different angles foregrounds the legacy of Inge King and Norma Redpath, two central figures of Australian modernist sculpture with significant works in McClelland’s outdoor collection. In conjunction, eleven contemporary artists will be showcased who extend conceptual and aesthetic concerns in King and Redpath’s practice, and who expand the legacies of modernism in a contemporary spatial context:
