Seasons Greetings from our new Vice President

As the new Vice President I will endeavour to do my best at assisting the ASV President and Committee in the smooth running and promotion of the ASV.

It was a sad moment seeing Gillian (leader of the pack) step down from being President. She still remains an integral part of our amazing committee and will continue giving us support.

Matthew 25

Many of you will have seen Tim Schmalz’s sculpture depicting Jesus as a homeless man wrapped in a blanket on park bench. Castings have been installed in cities including Glasgow but not London. Tim named the statue Matthew 25, in reference to a quote from that gospel -

"Truly I tell you,
whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine,
you did for me."

ASV History

We did put this article out last month - but it bears repeating - in the intervening weeks the committee has needed a History to take to publicity meetings, think about grant applications and talk about in general - what we have is too bald, too scanty and too BORING! We do have as interesting and colourful past as any arts organisation and we all stand to learn from it. Anyone who want to help with the history project - please get in touch with a committee member.

ASV Christmas Party

It rained a little but nature put on a great show of clouds over the ranges at Yarra Glen. In no way dampened our spirits and although only a few gathered for our christmas party it was a friendly happy time with lovely wine and food and conversation. Sincere thanks to Marg and Don Carey who worked so hard to make the garden, tennis court and pool so pristine. Thank you once again for opening your house. You are lovely people. We were sorry the numbers were down but it is such a busy time of year so whatever you were doing we wish you happy times and a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Melanie Guile spoke to us at the AGM - to get the flavour, enthusiasm and expertise of her talk you just had to be there - but here is the gist of her talk.

Post from Betty Knight

Betty Knight sent a great email with some funny images - I finally tracked down the site: http://lenta.lol/20-people-who-know-how-to-pose-with-sculptures/ it's worth checking out!

The Final Word...

Hi All,
As many of you will know I resigned as President of the Association of Sculptors at the AGM. I was disappointed that I was unable to find anyone to replace me. However, Yvonne Monik is now Vice President. Yvonne is very willing and capable but works full time and is also continuing to be very involved with our exhibitions. It would be great if someone would step up to help her.

Report on the AGM

Approximately 20 people attended the AGM and responded favourably to Melanie Guile’s enthusiastic and competent discussion of the proposed history project for the ASV.

The important agenda items were worked through:

History for the ASV

Melanie Guile, a writer and experienced historian, as an introduction, told us a little about herself, past projects, background and qualifications . She then explained the process of writing a history. She told us the benefits of, and why we should write a history and the aims. She described what a history may be like and what it would cover including events, key people, social and artistic contexts; the impact of the ASV and its achievements. It would include referenced material, e.g. members and prize winners.

She explained how she would go about putting a history together- The process which would involve research, interviews, invite members input. She would need to get ideas from members, documents, memoirs, letters etc. Finally she explained what a history of the ASV might achieve for the organisation and its members.

The first question raised of course was the cost. This is a large sum not able to be defined at this stage as we need to decide how extensive we wish the history to be and how presented. If we are to even consider this it will be necessary to carry out some serious fundraising in the form of grants sponsorship or social events.

Melanie was an interesting speaker and I think those present were impressed

With much excitement I joined the (European) Sculpture Network on an exclusive trip to Venice for its 57th International Art Exhibition "La Biennale di Venezia". There, 43 participants from nine different countries had the opportunity to enjoy summer and art in Northern Italy and travel with other like-minded companions who shared their passion for Contemporary Sculpture! We opened up the possibility to exchange views and to visit 18 presentations from various artists.

Joan Macrae born Feb 25th 1918, died Sept 18th 2017

Joan’s contribution to art, sculpture and ceramics in Beaumaris was considerable. A gentle, warm, friendly and welcoming person she was loved by all. Her drive, enthusiasm, intelligence, creativity and practical abilities were endless. Through her work the Beaumaris Art Group began.

Help Needed

We have been contacted through the website by the owner of a broken water feature. The owner has been informed by the nursery that sold it to him that the original sculptor has died. So we have been approached to find someone to help. The original bowl was apparently made from Hebel but a ceramic replacement may well be the most appropriate.

From the President

Hi All,

With NBN roll out , bumping out the exhibition and catching our breath this newsletter is likely to be a little late. But better late than never. Thanks again to our editor Jenny for getting all the news to us.

Well yes another successful Annual Exhibition has finished. Was it successful? Well we had some very happy award winners, very happy exhibitors who sold works and in my time spent at Bourke Place, I saw and listened to some very happy sculptors meeting other sculptors learning more about their techniques, materials and making new friends. From where I sit that is a successful exhibition.

From the President

Hi All,

Did you know that the Association of Sculptors has been in existence since the early 30’s? It sprung from a group of dynamic talented artist and while it has undergone many organisation and structural changes its ideals have been retained. Did you know that there is a short but interesting history on our website? It is really worth looking at to understand who we are now. Unfortunately the documented history ends in the 90’s so as a committee we have been looking at the possibility of updating our history. We have considered employing a historian but it is a very costly exercise. Jackie Mckinnon introduced us to Melanie Guile who is an excellent word-smith and researcher and very interested in putting together a comprehensive history to date. Melanie will explain something about the process and her ideas at our AGM. We would like members input and view on this before we proceed. It is still costly so we will need to raise funds or obtain a grant.

Organising the Annual and Awards Exhibiton is in the last frantic days and underneath a calm exterior the whole committee is paddling furiously. Work to go in the show is looking great so we are eagerly awaiting set up when we get to see it for real.

The July Meeting

Susie Ashkenazi addressed the recent ASV meeting regarding her journey to the remote hills of Aragon in north eastern Spain to learn sculpting in stone. In July 2016 she joined ASV members Tania Stavovy, Clare Collins and Anna Auditore in Barcelona. The journey was planned on line through Global Stone who conduct the northern hemisphere summer classes in the tiny Spanish town of Canada De Bentatanduz. This particular workshop is run during the northern summer by Jon Sait; Welsh sculptor, poet, art dealer and teacher. The studio is in the spacious outdoor terrace of his rustic period house in an ancient village situated 1442 metres above sea level, being the second highest place in all of Spain. Jon named it Studio Golondrina after the native swallow that flies at that altitude.

From the President

Hi All,

We used to say "Let the buyer beware" Now we have to say " let the seller beware " especially when it comes to the internet. Just recently I have been asked by some of our members about some emails they heave received. It is so exciting to get an email from UK as Elnaz Nourizadeh did. A gentleman asking to buy a sculpture for his wife. It was all going well until Shipping was discussed and transfers of money etc. Elnaz started to smell a rat and contacted me to ask me to warn other sculptors.. Having had a few other similar enquiries I was able to agree with her that it was a scam. So disappointing but better not to be sucked in.

‘Unique or Edition’? that is the question

‘Unique or Edition’? that is the question… when I considered my entries to this years AAE 2017 they are, in fact, both. Without any doubt the work has been taken from a mould that I have used before (and will likely use again) but finished singularly in different materials and colours that it would be impossible to repeat even if I wanted to. Consequently both unique and an edition.

Hi all,

I am sure I was only writing the presidents letter yesterday. Where does a month go?

I will use this opportunity to fill you in on a few things that have happened.

As you know we had an SOS from Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron requesting Sculptures for their exhibition. Thanks to all the sculptors who made such an effort to get their work there. They were delighted. Brownie points for you and the Association. – See report below

As you will know there has been discussion about a partnership and connection with McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. This unfortunately has not eventuated. However I have been assured that this is still a possibility. So we will keep communications open.

Dates for Your Diary

Thu 11 May - visit to Coates Studio Foundry at 10.15 am. Ewan Coates, who is also an artist, will talk about preparing work for casting and will do a "pour" for us. Limited to 25, so the first 25 to call me will be in. I will need to know numbers by no later than 2 May to confirm with Ewan.

Report on Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron Easter Exhibition

Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron Easter Art Show - and below we have a notice from Beaufort Art Exhibition

(Excerpt from Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron report)

Andrew Bryant
"The Second Performance"
We showcased a broad range of artistic works in a variety of media, with the introduction of sculptures adding a new dimension to the show that was very well received. We are still tallying up the final results of the Art Show but the feedback has been that it has been the Best Show on the Mornington Peninsula and the most successful Art Show to date at BYS. We had 323 works on display from 106 artists of which 31 were sculptures.

Rosa Tato at the April Monthly Meeting

"The minute she walked into the joint
I could see she was a gal of distinction
A real creator…..hard working and so refined".

We did get a projector to work eventually -
it required both luck and patience. Rosa and Marija waiting

Following some challenges relating to acquiring and operating a projector for Rosa’s images, this was how Rosa Tato was introduced at Wednesday’s meeting by Marija Patterson who, in 2002, was on the selection panel, interviewing candidates for a place into the BFA (Sculpture) course at RMIT.
