Shortlisted artists announced for the Mt Buller Sculpture Award 10 Jun 2012

The Mt Buller Arts Association is delighted to announce the artists shortlisted for the inaugural Mt Buller Sculpture Award. 22 artists have been selected from over 70 national and international entries by award judge Doug Hall, AM. The shortlisted artists’ work will be installed in the spectacular surrounds of the Mt Buller alpine village from December 2012 until April 2013, and one artist will be named the winner of the $100,000 Mt Buller Sculpture Award at a ceremony taking place on 20 February. The winning work will be permanently sited on the mountain, becoming the inaugural piece in Australia’s first mountain-top Sculpture Park.
The biennial $100,000 Mt Buller Sculpture Award is one of Australia’s top two most valuable arts prizes. In addition to the main prize, there will also be a $10,000 People’s Choice Prize, sponsored by Foodworks.
Award Judge Doug Hall said “The vastness and diversity of styles, interest and ambition in the applications was considerable. The ideal of a mountain top sculpture park is unique in Australia, and with the calibre of work the prize has attracted the Mount Buller Sculpture Park should develop into a great cultural attraction.”
The shortlisted artists are Adrian MAURIKS, Andrew ROGERS, Christabel WIGLEY, Dean BOWEN, Damien ELDERFIELD and Lani FENDER, David WATERS, Deborah REDWOOD, Ewen COATES, Faith SEMIZ, Frank VELDZE, Geoff OVERHE, Hendrik FORSTER, Jacek WANKOWSKI, Joanna POSA, Jonathan LEAHEY, Julie COLLINS and Derek JOHN, Louis PRATT, Matthew HARDING, Michael LE GRAND, Michael SNAPE, Morgan SHIMELD, and Rudi JASS.
Shortlisted works range in size, scale and material from Deborah Redwood’s Emergence made from old skis, Ewan Coates’ 2.4m fibreglass Multiverse, Adrian Mauviks sinuous epoxy resin Strange Fruit, Joanne Posa’s copper and wood Tanked and Frank Veldze’s giant cage Dream Infinity.
Consultant to the Mt Buller Sculpture Park Jonah Jones said, “The Mt Buller Sculpture Park joins the network of great international sculpture parks around the world. Sculptures will be set outdoors in the mountain terrain of alpine wild flowers in summer, and majestic snow covered ranges in winter: visitors will experience the works in vastly different conditions in the same landscape.”
Mt Buller is Australia’s best known and most loved winter and summer alpine destination. It is the most accessible alpine resort in Australia, and offers spectacular views, clean mountain air and a cool summer climate. The summit of Mt Buller rises to an altitude of 1,804 metres above sea level, whilst the Mt Buller village stands at a height of 1,600 metres and is located 240 kms from Melbourne.
