OCTOBER MEETING

"People learn nothing when they're asleep
and very little when they're bored..."
- John Cleese

and I maintain they learn even less if they aren't even there..... the eight people who were at the Community Arts room on Wednesday evening had a lot of fun looking at the bits and pieces people brought in:

JOHN BISHOP brought in some Paulownia wood that he had carved, and a range of hand carving tools – not his beautiful carving axe but a range of knives and chisels some on a multi-tool arrangement

GILLIAN GOVAN showed us her Dremel and the Duratec from Jaycar she had just bought and the fantastic range of attachments including a flexible drive... there were many oohs and ah's... and a couple of “let's buy that and can we get a discount if we buy several at once?” There was talk of people's favourite attachment and some interesting uses – such as using the Dremel as a lathe. In fact Gillian is going to buy for a few people you can contact her on 0412122884 or email gmps.govan@bigpond.com. There was discussion of using gel gloves when using power tools – some of the more moderate hands use gel bicycle gloves as they fit better.

AVIS GARDNER showed us a perspex roller that she uses to create even thickness pieces in her clay work, and also a small plaster block – again for manipulating clay – she gave us a fascinating insight into the making of her beautiful and intricate sculptures.

JENNY RICKARDS brought in a cabinet scraper that looks like French curves – very handy for getting a good surface on carved wood. Also the literature for a room air filtration unit – a great piece of OH&S equipment that sets up an air circulation pattern in the studio and filters out harmful dust before it settles out – to rise and offend next time you walk into the studio. The university study on room air filtration unit is on the Internet at
http://www.jet-tools.com.au/Media/Tool%20Test%20Air%20Filters_FWW.pdf

MICHAEL MESZAROS brought in a new copper fabricated work and talked about the tips and tricks of making it, and he talked about a couple of new works and the means of placing them on site – including getting bluestone from China rather than Australia

We all learned something – and took away some great camaraderie.

And the day after the meeting - Gillian did a carving course with Jenny Whiteside. “Excellent. I carved soapstone and Marija and another friend did limestone. A very worthwhile day when we learnt a lot, talked a lot and had something to show for it at the end.”

GRAND RE-OPENING OF BRUNO’S ART GALLERY

Well, it's been a busy time, but it's certainly all been for a good cause and I'm delighted to finally announce that the Grand Re-opening date for the Gallery will be Sunday November 6th.Looking back this is something of a miracle!
Having had no insurance for the gallery, due to circumstances, there has been a lot of unexpected magic along the way in the form of the hands and hearts of so many amazing people who have given so much along this transformational journey . . .
We are touched and can't thank people enough for their generosity of time, energy, help and support along the way.
I've considered myself more 'Bruno The Builder' for the last two years! I'm extremely happy with how the gallery building is looking and it will be great to finally open the doors to the world.
It's fantastic and rewarding to stand back now and see the gallery and house both almost complete!
Bruno

OF INTEREST TO SCULPTORS
I was hoping you could put some marble carvers in touch with me. I have about 3 tons of Chillagoe black and white marble. All pieces are quite large, with flat bases on them. I am looking for someone to take the marble from Hampton. Could you please advise if you would have anyone interested? Thank you. Regards, Donna donnagough1@gmail.com ************************************************************************
Thanks to Michael Meszaros, Gillian Govan, Janice McCarthy and Monica Mauer for putting the information together
