President's Letter

May has slipped by in a flash - who else is working on their offering for the Annual Exhibition? I suspect I’m not the only one. The preview images look amazing, so we are expecting a great Annual & Awards Exhibition..

We had an inspiring meeting at Tania Hungerford’s studio and home last Saturday. The meeting was a friendly intimate chat - ending up by a warm fire with shared food and drink - lots of information was exchanged and we came out of it with more and greater friendships.

We all admired Tania’s beautiful carved works - we had the opportunity to find out about Tania's inspiration and technique - both are amazing!

As befits someone working with precious material - in this case centuries old Huon pine - Tania creates a maquette prior to roughing out her carvings.

There are other activities coming up - we just need to put out the notices. After the Annual & Awards Exhibition we’ll have a “Show and Tell’’ possibly by the fire at someone’s place… we always get more information from unstructured chat - you never know what questions to ask until sculpture, tools or material stimulate curiosity. Indeed that was the feedback we received at the Hungerford’s home-studio. Sculptors really enjoy a chat and the opportunity to talk about their work.

In the meantime we’ll enjoy the Annual & Awards Exhibition - hopefully sculptors and our visitors will visit… some of them will vote in the people’s choice award, some even fall in love and buy a sculpture… something that speaks to them personally… We will also have signs up -

Sculpture is tactile but please do not touch - except that if our visitor is vision impaired we will know which sculptures can be touched under guidance.

You remember answering that question when you fill in the entry form. If this has changed please make sure that you let our coordinator know at least when you deliver your work to the exhibition.

In the meantime - enjoy your participation in this our Annual and Awards Exhibition - I look forward to seeing you there.

Happy sculpting, Jenny Rickards, President
