complete with printed notes |
Gillian had not only cleaned the studio - there were two heaters and she had prepared photocopied notes for those making a foray into mould making. First we all discussed multi part moulds and how to decide where to make the divisions. The advantage of having knowledgeable people present was that we got a broad perspective on the subject - the problem - well there was so much going on it was hard to concentrate.
here is the sequence Gillian demonstrated for us - complete with one she had started earlier....
adding thickener |
first layer |
The thickened layer |
adding felt |
a small amount of catalyst |
making a case mould |
Gillian demonstrated making a two part mould. Starting with the fine detail layer of un-thickened silicone, she then mix a batch of silcone mixed with thixotropic additive to fill in the undercuts, while the silicone was still tacky the felt backing was adhered and cut to shape and finally the fibreglass case mould built up over the top. The resin is smelly so the population in the studio thinned out a bit at the point. Gillian’s comprehensive notes are available if you would like them - gmps.govan@bigpond.com. You needed to be there to pick up the input from the onlookers - mould making being a tricky business with plenty of traps for young players.
And other information came up on the night - Rod Sanders brought in his latest acquisition: Vincas Jomantis by Ken Scarlett and Robert Lindsay
Thank you Gillian
