The Waverley Council Mayor’s prize of $5,000 was awarded to Kerrie Argent from Western Australia for her sculpture ‘Overconsumption’. Kerrie’s striking work is located on the rocks on the walk between Marks Park and Bondi. It is created by 80,000 plastic bottle tops which are joined by 185,000 cable ties to create five great mountains of garbage which slump over the rocks.
‘Overconsumption’ was chosen by the exhibition’s judging panel: Dr Michael Hill, Head of Art History and Theory at National Art School, Erlend Høyersten, Director of ARoS (Denmark) and Denise Mimmochi, Curator, Australian Art at Art Gallery of NSW.
The Art Gallery Society of NSW prize of $5,000, donated by the Art Gallery Society of NSW, was awarded to Hannah Steefkerk a Dutch artist living in Sweden, for her sculpture ‘To Take Care Of’ and was chosen by Anne Ryan, Curator, Australian Prints, Drawing and Watercolours, AGNSW. A series of stones and bandages, this sensitive work is speckled across the rocks where the pathway from Bondi Beach begins.
The Andrea Stretton Memorial Invitation of $5,000 to exhibit in Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe in Perth 2015 was awarded to NEON from Victoria, for their sculpture ‘House of Mirrors’. Created by an award winning design company, the work re-defines the architecture of the common beach and is made of series of mirrors and gabion cages designed to accentuate the key views of the outside world.
The Wallace Arts Trust New Zealand Sculptor Award of $NZ7,000 was awarded to Chris Bailey, from Waiheke Island, Auckland. This generous award assisted Chris with the transportation of the hefty granite work from Auckland and the installations costs of the sculpture ‘Bondi Points’. Inspired by Aboriginal stone blades found on Bondi Beach in 1899, the work references both past and future in promoting contemporary discussion around Australia’s history as Australia looks forward to its future.
The Macquarie Group Sculpture Inside Prize of $2,500 was awarded to Ralph Tikerpea from NSW, for his sculpture ‘Modern Family’.
At the launch of the 18th annual Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi at Marks Park, on Wednesday 23rd October, the Premier of NSW, The Hon. Mike Baird announced Peter Lundberg from the United States, as the recipient of the $60,000 Macquarie Group Sculpture Prize, one of the most generous prizes in the world for his sculpture ‘Ring’.

$10,000
The Lion represents majesty, power, strength and positivity. I have always been in awe of the mighty lion and wanted to reproduce a sculpture that embodied all the elements that I admired. The lion is a positive symbol for all cultures; known as a protector and, in folklore tales throughout history, for its loyalty.
