Tesselaar Tulip Festival - Future Opportunity

Following recent exploratory discussions between John Wooller, Mark Cowie and representatives of the famous Tesselaar Tulip Festival (held every September-October in the Dandenongs, and attended by 50,000 people last year) there is every possibility that members of the Association may be able to exhibit suitable outdoor pieces at this year’s Festival.

As part of Tesselaar’s corporate development they are very keen to enter into a long-term relationship with the Association as a means of establishing a presence in the art world with an annual exhibition, competition and sale of sculptures. Such an exhibition could ultimately be similar in stature and prize money as those conducted annually by, for example, Montalto and Yerring Station. But there is much to be done before such an eventuality could occur.

As a consequence of this interest, and as a first step in the process, Tesselaar has been informed that the Association’s members would be canvassed to assess the level of interest in such an exhibition. If there is sufficient response from members, Tesselaar has agreed to test the water by putting on a small show this year with a People's Choice Award funded by the company. The company would also take the opportunity to survey visitors during the Festival to gauge the response of the public to such a venture/event.

If this pilot show succeeds the intention is for Tesselaar to increase the funding to provide for an annual exhibition and sale with a substantial acquisitive prize funded by them. They are keen to establish a sculpture garden on their property and, therefore, forge a successful working relationship with the Association and its members.

Discussions are at a preliminary stage and there is a bit of work to undertake and a number of logistics to sort through before the potential of such an exhibition ever becomes a reality. While these discussions continue it would be very helpful to hear from members as to their interest in exhibiting at such an event later this year. The interest of members to exhibit will determine if we proceed with a pilot exhibition, of whatever size, this year.

Mark Cowie has agreed to act as the contact point for the Association and if anyone wishes to express their interest in exhibiting - or if members have suggestions they would like to contribute - then you are urged to contact him on 5348 5696 or by email forgedgarden@vic.chariot.net.au Mark will keep the Association’s executive apprised of all his discussions with Tesselaar and the contributions and suggestions made by members regarding this proposal.
