History of the Awards
The two main prizes are the Margaret Gunnerson William Hoggan Thomas Award for the best sculpture by a sculptor with over 10 Years sculpting experience. and the Tina Wentcher Sculpture Prize for those with fewer than 10 years sculpting experience.
The Tina Wentcher Sculpture Prize and its method of judging was a bequest of member sculptor Tina Wentcher who died in 1976. For the past 20 or so years it has alternated with the Andor Meszaros Prize. The Tina Wentcher medallion made by Michael Meszaros was first offered as part of the prize in 2001. In recent years the prize conditions have been changed to encourage sculptors with less than 10 years sculpting experience rather than an age based system. The ASV invites all emerging sculptors including non-members to submit an entry for this prize. The Tina Wentcher Medallion is judged by a panel of three: the ASV president, a non member judge and a member judge.
The William Hoggan Thomas Award was established in 1985 by Margaret Gunnersen Thomas in memory of her late husband, a stonemason and quarry owner. . Since Margaret Gunnersen's death in 2007 the prize for the Margaret Gunnersen William Hoggan Thomas Award has been funded by her family. Entries are open only to financial members with greater than 10 years sculpting experience and the award is decided by the vote of the exhibiting member sculptors. It is considered by ASV members to be the greatest accolade as it is the sum of the opinions of their peers, colleagues and competitors.
