Feature Sculptor This Month: Rod Sanders
Rod, working as a pharmacist, was greatly influenced by student work at RMIT and the Centre 5 group of sculptors, so much so that he undertook a degree part time at RMIT in fine arts. Six years by a mature student part time was no mean feat. He subsequently sold the pharmacy, bought property at Red Hill, and joined the ASV in the late 1970s. He was greatly influenced by Carl Duldig in these early days, and with his encouragement started to exhibit continuously. Initial work was using laminated wood but glue problems led him to turn to steel brought home by his daughters from BHP, and subsequently he found great satisfaction with Corten steel.
Rod says he prefers to build rather than carve, and prefers independence from a foundry. His process involves drawings, then a Marquette in industrial plasticine with steel armatures. Templates are made on paper, enlarged 3 times, and then wooden templates crated on chipboard. Steel is cut with a plasma torch, and then a battle royal starts to form the steel as in the Marquette, and weld the whole together so we can’t see the joins.
Rod started with very figurative work, became very abstract in his RMIT studies, and is now most happy with a combination of figurative and abstractive elements.
His “Young Lady” won the ASV Margaret Gunnerson-Thomas prize in 2006. He has been a loyal ASV supporter, was President for a year, and has also run various ASV activites.
Pressure of farm work inhibits production of sculpture at times.
Keep it up Rod! Even if neither major political party seems to have a clear policy on supporting the Arts.

Sculpture among the Tulips 2010
The Third Annual Tesselaar Sculpture Prize is almost upon us. The Prize has become an excitingnew addition to the famous annual Tesselaar Tulip Festival.
Entries closed on Friday, 16 July.
The Tulip Festival – in Silvan in the Dandenong Ranges - has been well-established for over 50 years, and runs for four weeks from mid-September to mid-October. The Festival attracts about 50,000 visitors to the many organised activities and popular events.
This year an Acquisitive Award of $7,500 is being offered by Tesselaar to the sculptor winning the Tesselaar Sculpture Prize. A People’s Choice Award of $500, as voted by visitors to the Festival, will also available. One lucky visitor to the Festival will also be selected to win a voter’s prize. Organised by Tesselaar, and with some assistance from the Association of Sculptors of Victoria, the Tesselaar Sculpture Prize is becoming an established component of Victoria’s arts calendar.
Rachael Pearce, marketing co-ordinator at Tesselaar, said, “As part of continuing our program of developing the Tulip Festival we have been very pleased with the development of the exhibition and competition. The intention is to grow the prize into a significant annual sculpture event and we hope that this year’s increase in prize-money is a step in that direction.”
The Tesselaar Sculpture Prize is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to the Tulip Festival to view and appreciate a range of sculptural styles and mediums in a unique and colourful outdoor setting.
Visitors will be privileged to view sculptures created by some of Victoria’s finest sculptors.
The Tesselaar Tulip Festival will be open each day between 10:00am and 5:00pm, from 16
September to 13 October.

Thanks are due to this winery for their continuing support of ASV functions. KOOYONGA CHAPEL WINERY is next to a ribbon of bush that runs from the Great Australian Divide down to Benalla. It is a small winery owned and operated by the Saunders family. The winemaker is Barry Saunders. 20 acres are planted with equal areas of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. First plantings were in 2000. The mild
climate extends the ripening period and adds to the complexity and intensity of flavour in the grapes. See: www.kooyongachapel.com
