Community Arts Morning

My children’s primary school recently had a community arts morning where a number of artists demonstrated their particular art form for the students.  The demonstrations included oil and watercolour painting, drawing (pen and ink and architectural), lino cut printing, music, floral art, jewelry making, cake decoration and others, plus me doing limestone sculpture.

The children went around in class groups with their teachers, watching each artist and asking questions.  Typical questions were how I got started, how long I had been doing it, what type of stone I was using and where did I get my ideas from.  The kids were quite interested in the process of sculpture, from the initial sketch, to drawing the shape on the stone, roughing it out and refining the form.  There were also questions about the tools I was using and many seemed to like the idea of hacking away at a block of limestone with an axe so I had to be vigilant.

It was great to see the kids so interested in different art forms, including some they may not normally be exposed to at school.  Answering all the questions meant I didn’t get the sculpture finished, but when it is complete it will be installed in the “frog bog” that is being created later this year at the school.

It was a very enjoyable morning and I can highly recommend getting involved if a school near you does something similar.  If not, maybe you could suggest it!  Finally, I must include a quote from a banner the kids have working on which was on the wall near where I was working -  “earth without art is e...h”.
