From the President

A moth finds a resting place on
Allan Goedecke’s sculpture at
Herring Island. Images of all the
works can be seen on our website.
One twelfth of the year has passed already but with much activity. Herring Island has been a great success not just with sales but with the number of visitors drawn to this great exhibition. The quality of work has been outstanding and appreciated by all visitors. The exhibition is a showcase of who we are as artists – the diversity, the passion, the skill and the perception of art and life.

There has been and still is a lot of activity going on by the MIFGS Coordination committee to ensure that all will go smoothly during the exhibition.

Vale John Wooller

John Wooller, a past ASV president, died on 23rd December 2018 following a long and debilitating illness. His family were with him at the time.

He was my good friend and confidante as well as being a creative mentor to me for almost twenty years. I will miss our regular get togethers where we would pontificate over all manner of matters. Most of all he enjoyed pondering the human condition.

So What's NAVA Doing?

The National Association of Visual Artists is out there campaigning for our interests - and it can be hard to keep up with the issues identified - so to whet your appetite here is an extract from the first newsletter for the year:

We’re spending first sitting week in Canberra at Parliament House putting the case in back-to-back, one-on-one meetings with MPs across all major parties

In partnership with Museums & Galleries Australia, we’re hosting an advocacy priorities roundtable in Canberra with key national contemporary arts bodies

Just as we did with the 2018-2019 Federal Budget, we’ll scrutinise this year’s Budget in great detail, offering critical responses for a diversity of media to ensure that there’s a strong arts perspective in this national conversation

ACTION: We’ll start the year once again with #artsagenda, asking you to share what you’d like us to raise with MPs in those meetings.

Members' News

Through the support of the Tina Wentcher Award, Lana Thymianidis recently practised in a studio residency in Norway. During her stay, she worked out of the remote village of Austmarka researching patterns in nature and developing her latest body of work. Her next series examines depictions of fleeting paper objects (including paper boats and planes) that are cast into bronze. Lana looks forward to returning to Norway for her solo exhibition in Oslo in 2020
