President's Ramblings - March '23

I’m really looking forward to visiting the sculpture garden at the flower show - the sculpture that comes out of our respective studios is fresh, considered and relevant.

Outdoors we have access to amazing light - the random, the weather dependent, the range of angles and colours. We are also at the mercy of weather impacts on our work - wind and rain and UV light can wreak havoc on delicate structures. The work in the exhibition is designed to withstand these - the ephemeral work that people produce in the workshops can be a reflection on time and impermanence - what a pleasure to experience it all!

McClelland Gallery Visit

Earlier this month a group of us took a volunteer guided tour of the Centre 5 exhibition at McClelland Gallery. Our guide - Sue - gave a passionate account of the contribution made by the influx of artists and ideas after the second war. At this distance in time the actual Centre 5 principles don’t seem so radical, nor so different to the work of their contemporaries - but certainly the period was a fantastic opening of ideas.

Thank you to Jude Bridges-Tull for organising yet another stimulating outing.

ASV Exhibitions

We look forward to seeing and taking part in the Melbourne International Garden Show. Then…….. onward to our Annual and Awards Exhibition where we highlight the works of members and non-members of the Association of Sculptors emerging and experienced. This exhibition will again be held in the galleries of the Victorian Artists Society from 15th June to 3rd July with an opening event on 17th June.

The exhibition was well received in this venue last year and with plenty of publicity and advertising this year we hope to make it bigger and better.

Entry forms are on our website https://sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/exhibitions/application_forms

Here are some images of some of the works last year in this magnificent venue.

Don't Miss - Driftwood the Musical

Driftwood The Musical tells the inspirational story of the renowned Austrian/Australian sculptor Karl Duldig and his artist-inventor wife, Slawa Horowitz-Duldig. We follow their lives in pre-war Vienna, the family’s narrow escape from Nazi Austria, Slawa’s ingenious invention of the foldable umbrella, and the incredible chain of events that took place after miraculously escaping the Holocaust and rebuilding their careers as artists in Melbourne.

Hi Everyone,

We are looking for sculptors to participate at the show by demonstrating or giving a talk. If you would like to join in there are  2 options to choose from .. or both!

Social Media

This photo of Trevor in his studio was one of the most popular posts of the last month on our social media!

Our public really likes photos of us- sculptors- with our work, or in our studio.

They get a lot of responses, and lead to more followers ( and potential exhibition visitors!)

If any of you have- or can take- a photo of you and your work or in your studio, please send them to: asvsocialmedia@gmail.com

We will post them, with your tag, if you want. If you have any events you want to share- email those as well. We are getting quite a following, and it’s an easy way to attract more people!
