AGM Letter from Past Presidents

The formal notice of the Annual General meeting will be sent shortly - in the mean time a letter from two past presidents:

SPECIAL Information regarding the AGM on 12th October

Association of Sculptors of Victoria 2022 AGM

The ASV is at a critical point.

At the moment we do not have a President. Gillian has been Acting President simply because nobody else would do the job. The Presidential committee did not last long as two of its members became unable to continue.

Some other longstanding committee members have expressed the desire not to stand again for their positions at the AGM.

We have difficulty getting members to take up positions of responsibility on the committee.

We have relied on the same small group of dedicated people to keep the ASV running for many years. They have been on the committee administering the ASV, keeping accounts, taking and writing minutes of meetings, dealing with government requirements, run our exhibitions, managing the website, done publicity and organised meetings and activities. This has meant that there has not been a process of succession for new people to learn how to fulfil the functions of these positions. The people who form this core are becoming unable to continue with their functions and new volunteers are needed to take over their positions. They are tired and have other important matters in their lives to deal with.

Our website needs a major overhaul which will cost a considerable amount.

We have problems with our status as a charitable, tax-deductible gift organisation which may prove costly to remedy or may cause us to lose our tax-deductible status. It would be difficult and unreasonable to make financial decisions and move forward with these issues if we do not have an executive committee who can continue building on the work that has already been carried out.

We are grateful for the letter sent by Aukje Van Vark to members last year prior to the AGM expressing our situation and which resulted in the formation of a presidential team for a short time. However with the above issues to be resolved and as things stand at the moment the problem has become even more critical.

There has been heavy criticism of the ASV’s present situation from a few members, but those critics have not volunteered to take up positions and help solve the problem. Criticism is easy. Doing the work is the solution.

The situation will have to be confronted at the AGM on October 12th.

All members are urged to attend the AGM and to be prepared to take on positions on the committee and a new President will have to be found.

If this does not happen, the ASV will have to be wound up. This will mean that none of our regular exhibitions will take place and members will have to find other ways of showing their work. It will mean that the website will cease to exist and any member wishing to have an Internet presence will have to have their own individual website.

For too long most members have assumed that someone else will do the work of running the ASV, its exhibitions and its functions, and up until now, that has been the case.

We have reached a point where this will no longer happen unless people step forward to fill these positions.

Existing committee members will be willing to help with the transition, mentoring new office bearers and helping them learn the jobs.

If you want the ASV to continue, it is up to you to help it do so.

We need a President, Treasurer, Secretary & Public officer and volunteers to help with other functions as they occur.

All these roles could be shared. Job descriptions are available.
