In 2012 sculptor Louis Laumen was commissioned by the National Boer War Memorial Association (NBWMA) to create 4 1/12 life size bronze troopers on horseback as the major focus for the National Boer War Memorial on Anzac Parade, Canberra.
At just under 4m high and weighing 1.5 ton each , fully kitted out and moving to engage the enemy, it became the most challenging commission in Laumen’s 33 year career. Modelled in clay, at actual size, each sculpture required 6 months to perfect.
To complete the commission Fundere Foundry moved to a larger premises in Sunshine. Two 5 ton capacity cranes and an abundance of industrial sized space were crucial for the casting of these sculptures. The enormity of the artworks demanded they be divided into sections. Aproximately 30 individual pieces were cast and then meticulously pieced together to produce each sculpture.
Fundere Foundry occupies a very large factory in Melbourne’s west.
Space in excess to the foundry’s needs has been allocated to artist’s studios and the Sunshine Print Artsace (SPA). The studios offer workspace to sculptors, painters, fabricators and designers.
The Sunshine Print Art Space, scheduled to launch mid year, will offer fine art screen, fabric, litho, etching and relief printing facilities for artists, educators and students.
Working in partnership with Fundere, SPA aims to support and actively encourage creativity in the vital and exciting context of Melbourne’s largest foundry and potentially most signicant new arts scene in Melbourne.
