From Rod Sanders

I wasn’t expecting any parcels in the post so what a pleasant surprise it was – a couple of books from our bookworm daughter who has just discovered a gem of a bookshop in what used to be Georges in Collins Street. But why is she sending a book about fairies – then I look again – it’s about Ola Cohn’s life including her work on the Fairy Tree which took her three years to complete. It tells of her studio in Collins Street and later in Gipps Street (where the ASV used to meet when I first joined).

You will read of her four year study time in the UK under Henry Moore and others. During her stay she visited many European countries and found the experience of seeing the numerous cathedrals to be very gratifying. She tells of the sculpture classes she ran, the many commissions she worked on and the unpleasant press reviews she had to tolerate. The pictures show her and her friends, her work including the Fairy Tree.

This is a delightful insight into Ola’s life and well worth the read:

A Way with the Fairies – the lost Story of Ola Cohn: An Autobiography Edited by Barbara Lemon. Victorian Community History Awards 2014

COMMENDATION - Historical Interpretation Award. The 2014 Victorian Community History Awards are proudly presented by Public Records Office Victoria and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria.

ASV Library

Marija Patterson is the keeper of the ASV library - we have a modest collection of donated books - and hopes not only to add to our resource material but also to find a more accessible home for it.

Having a place for our library is on our wish list for a home - anyone who wants to discuss ideas further is welcome to contact any committee member - we can generally be detained by coffee, wine or herbal tea depending on which person you are talking about.

Editor’s whinge

We all know someone who is worse off than ourselves - I’m no exception so - I can’t complain .... BUT!!!! It’s time someone else took an interest in the mechanics of getting a newsletter out , what it should or could look like what form it is in.... I do enjoy seeing the Google Alerts roll in, getting items via the website and interacting with members - the odd phone call or face to face meeting goes a long way towards keeping me human ( I think) - my details are on the office bearers page.
