Herring Island - and it’s over already

Part of the set up for Herring Island happened before Christmas 2013 and all the out-of-weekend access was from the Burnley Depot of Parks Victoria. The reason for the early drop off was to help sculptors who might be away during the Friday set up - it proved useful with quite a happy little party going over to the island.

the star studded walk to Como Landing
The reason we left from Burnley harbour? Well the contractors working on the landscaping around Como Landing will be there for some time as they have an ambitious project to reinstate wetlands and create walking paths all around. Right now it looks a mess. There is access on the weekends while the workers aren’t there.

"Welcome Home!" by Lucinda Brash

"Nurture" by Heather Bryant

There was great work in the exhibition but just five sales. However sculptors can comfort themselves that the work was well received and the exhibition looked pretty good. Thanks to Andrew Bryant for help during set up, thanks to all the exhibiting sculptors for their help with the opening, the sitting and demonstrating and then the unexpected adventure of the last day:

"Protecting Mother Earth" Monica Mauer Jan
Cetta Pilati marble mosaic cutting
We know the Yarra is tidal at Herring Island - the river has been straightened and falls blasted and indeed Herring Island created by the human urge to modify the environment to suit some other vision. The tide rises and falls - with the moon and also with air pressure and wind... so on that last day the punt operator was horrified to see the tide receding as if someone had pulled the plug - the Como Landing pontoon settled into the mud and the punt could only approach at ramming speed to push through those last sticky centimetres. Then the same at the island landing - the call was made and the exhibition closed about half an hour early - everyone helped - particular mention of Mark Cowie who went back and forth getting things off, We got the sold works to their purchasers and a couple of sculptors and their partners to their respective wedding
Saeed Shojaee portraiture
anniversaries.

The images of the works are on the website and on a slide show on the Herring Island Festival site.

The rest of the festival continues until 21st April. ASV members may also like to consider entering the open call A4 Art Australia run by the Contemporary Art Society - more on www.contemporaryartsociety.org.au

See you there - Jenny Rickards

The next exhibition in the Herring Island Summer Arts Festival is that of the Basketmakers of Victoria. Their show runs from Saturday 1st February to Sunday 16th February.
