President's Message April 2011

Geoff Williams, President
March has been a very active month, with three exhibitions running: Melbourne Flower & Garden Show (MIFGS), Castlemaine, and the Elliot ASV Gallery. Mark Cowie has provided another excellent example of his professional approach to organising exhibitions with both MIFGS and the Castlemaine exhibitions. The new central avenue style of presentation of 71 sculptures at MIFGS was greatly admired. Thanks are again due to our great sponsors – IMG, Dame Elizabeth Murdoch, Bulleen Art & Garden (Meredith Plain), and The Forged Garden and Art Exhibition Services (Mark Cowie’s firms). An enjoyable evening was held at La Notte subsequent to the Opening, topped off with a good meal in quality company. Apologies were received from the Lord Mayor, the Deputy Lord Mayor, the CEO of the Myer Foundation and Mr Ron Pitcher AM. We were indebted to Neil and Catherine Tait for hosting the new exhibition at Castlemaine, and more will be written on the 32 exhibits shown and the Opening subsequently.
There has been an active and expanded exhibition program this year, but there has not been a parallel increase in volunteers to do the work. Volunteer numbers are diminishing due to family illness and escalating work pressures. There are far too few doing far too much for an inert majority. Vacancies include a new Web Site Coordinator, a trainee Exhibition Coordinator, a trainee Activities Coordinator, a Newsletter Coordinator, a trainee Membership Coordinator, and a Treasurer for about two months.
The AGM will be 13 July 2011, and members should plan their support of the ASV. Activities, including exhibitions, will need to be cut if there is not more support. Volunteers please contact John Bishop, Secretary, on john@bishop.net. The Committee will need to approve appointments at Coordinator level.
Geoff Williams, President
