Letters to the Editor

To The Editor,
Your comments in the last edition of Sculpere in relation to membership and your reference to Rotary entirely miss the point.
Organisations only exist because of their Statement of purpose. It is why they are there. Changing the Membership clauses in no way alters the reasons for incorporation.
Rotary have in fact changed their membership rules in a number of ways, not the least of which was to open it up to women. Originally, there was only meant to be one representative of each trade or profession in the area that could join a club. Over the years they have found their way around this restriction to such an extent that you could find 5 or 6 from one profession in the one club. In so doing it has not changed Rotary as you suggest it would. Most will say Rotary is far better because of these changes.
Organisations (implicitly) ask for one thing when a member joins. Will you accept and support the principle aims and purposes of the organisation?
At the ASV our General Purposes are
1. To promote the creation and appreciation of sculpture in the State of Victoria.
2. To stimulate, plan, coordinate and generally advance sculptural activities in the State of Victoria.
3. To promote the welfare and interests of sculptors, students and teachers of sculpture in the State of Victoria.
4. To promote and foster the interests of the members of the Association.
None of the above require an individual to be a Sculptor.
I am one who has certainly “supported” Sculpture for the last 6 odd years. Any pretence I harbour of being a Sculptor only started two years ago.
Patrick Culshaw
